Launched with quiet fanfare (appropriately, given it runs almost silently), the Perle Noire is the flagship electric passenger vessel commissioned by SEINE ALLIANCE, and it’s rewriting the playbook on river cruising. Not only does it float with elegance, it does so without so much as a cough of carbon.
Built to carry 60 guests through the heart of Paris, the 22.5-metre vessel is propelled by a trio of high-performance outboard motors—each lovingly crafted by Hydro-Armour and powered by Torqeedo’s top-of-the-line Deep Blue 100i electric motors. These mighty motors draw, not gulp, from a bank of six Deep Blue Battery 80 units, offering a combined capacity of 480 kWh. Enough juice, Torqeedo assures us, for a two-hour glide along the Seine without even thinking about plugging in.
Now, that’s what we call civilised.
“The Perle Noire represents a new generation of sustainable vessels in Paris. It’s hard not to be taken by the idea: whisper-quiet propulsion, zero-emission elegance, and champagne flutes clinking under the shadow of Notre-Dame. It’s a scene that might make even the most hardened petrolhead pause.
The boat’s secret weapon? A combination of electric and hydraulic propulsion. The Deep Blue motors generate electrical energy, which is then used to build up hydraulic pressure, causing the propellers to spin with astonishing smoothness. And for the tight corners and narrow channels of central Paris, a bow thruster powered by an additional Deep Blue 50 motor takes care of nimble navigation.
A 40m² rooftop solar panel doesn’t just sit pretty either—it actively contributes extra range when the sun decides to shine over the City of Light. Innovative, stylish and silently superior.
Weighing in at 70 tonnes and designed for comfort, the Perle Noire has been a labour of love between Torqeedo and Brittany-based Hydro-Armour, renowned for its hydraulic propulsion expertise. Their collaboration is a testament to how French flair and German engineering can blend seamlessly on the water.
The project’s parent company, SEINE ALLIANCE, has long made it its mission to transform Paris’s waterways into a blueprint for low-impact urban transport. The Perle Noire is, in many ways, a floating prototype for their vision: that the river of tomorrow can be green, clean, and gorgeous.
“We believe the Seine should carry more than just tourists—it should carry a message,” a SEINE ALLIANCE spokesperson noted at the christening ceremony back in April.
