Chimu - logoIn a bold move that promises to reshape the future of Antarctic travel, Chimu Adventures has secured significant investment from Nordic Hamburg, a renowned maritime leader with a stellar reputation for low-emission shipping and innovative vessel management. This pivotal partnership positions Chimu at the forefront of sustainable polar expeditions, marking a new chapter in the company’s ambitious expansion into the polar cruise market.

Intrepid Travel will divest its ownership stake in Chimu Adventures as part of this strategic realignment. However, Intrepid remains committed to the relationship despite this shift, continuing as a key distribution partner for Chimu’s Antarctic expeditions. Intrepid’s decision to step back from ownership marks the end of an era. However, their enduring collaboration with Chimu will ensure that travellers still experience the best of both brands through seamless, expertly crafted polar journeys.

Nordic Hamburg Investment Powers New Growth

Nordic Hamburg’s investment in Chimu is a testament to the future potential of polar exploration, with an emphasis on low-emission technology and environmentally responsible travel. The partnership brings Nordic’s extensive maritime expertise, particularly in vessel safety and ship management and their groundbreaking work on minimizing emissions, into the heart of Chimu’s operations.

According to Chad Carey, Managing Director of Chimu Adventures, this is a natural progression for the company. “We’re excited to leverage Nordic’s deep-rooted knowledge and experience to accelerate our commitment to sustainable polar travel,” Carey remarked. “This investment is about much more than just expanding our fleet—it’s about pioneering a new way of experiencing the Antarctic, where responsible tourism and environmental stewardship are central.”

Intrepid Travel’s Evolving Role

Though Intrepid Travel will no longer hold a financial stake in Chimu, their collaboration remains robust. The two companies had previously collaborated on a three-season charter of the Ocean Endeavour, a ship known for its expert crew and top-tier amenities. The 2024/25 season will be the final one under Intrepid’s banner, giving travellers one last opportunity to experience Antarctica under the Intrepid brand.

James Thornton, CEO of Intrepid Travel, commented on the transition: “We are proud of what we have achieved in Antarctica, but with the end of our lease on the Ocean Endeavour, we feel that now is the right time to reevaluate our approach to the polar market. We remain deeply connected to Chimu and look forward to seeing how they transform Antarctic travel with their new partner.”

New Horizons with the Ocean Nova

A key component of Chimu’s future vision is the introduction of a new, cutting-edge vessel. Beginning in March 2026, Chimu will launch expeditions on the Ocean Nova, a well-regarded ship known for its lower emissions and more intimate cruising experience. Designed to accommodate smaller groups, the Ocean Nova will offer a more profound, more immersive Antarctic adventure, blending modern sustainability practices with unmatched access to the White Continent.

The introduction of the Ocean Nova represents just the first step in Chimu’s long-term strategy for low-impact Antarctic operations. Chimu aims to set a new standard for responsible tourism in one of the most fragile ecosystems on Earth by focusing on emission reduction and more minor, more intimate voyages.

Expanding Chimu’s Global Reach

In addition to its Antarctic expeditions, Chimu will continue to expand its offerings with tailor-made itineraries in Latin America, catering to a global audience. The investment from Nordic Hamburg also paves the way for Chimu to enter new markets, with a keen focus on North America and Europe. These regions represent vast untapped potential for travellers seeking luxury and sustainability in their adventures.

“We’re not just expanding geographically, we’re refining our model to meet the evolving demands of today’s travelers,” said Carey. “As more people seek meaningful, environmentally conscious travel experiences, Chimu will be there to offer options that combine adventure with purpose.”

The Future of Polar Travel

As the world embraces more responsible travel practices, Chimu Adventures is well-positioned to lead eco-friendly polar expeditions. With Nordic Hamburg’s backing and Intrepid Travel’s continued support as a distribution partner, Chimu is not only ensuring a more sustainable future for the Antarctic but also helping to shape the broader conversation around low-emission travel.

As the countdown begins for the 2026 launch of the Ocean Nova, travellers and industry experts are watching closely. Chimu Adventures is not just exploring the ends of the Earth—it’s redefining the very future of travel to these remote, breathtaking destinations.
