Passenger traffic in 2022 reached close to 7 billion, with a 53.5% increase from 2021 and a 73.8% recovery from 2019 results. The top 10 airports for total passenger traffic, representing 10% of global traffic, witnessed a gain of 51.7% from 2021 and an 85.9% recovery vis-à-vis their 2019 results.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) holds its position at the top of the 2022 rankings with 93.7 million passengers, followed by Dallas Fort Worth Airport (DFW), Denver Airport (DEN), and Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD). Five of the top 10 airports globally are in the United States, all with significant domestic passenger shares, between 75% and 95% domestic traffic.

Dubai Airport achieved 5th rank, Istanbul Airport reached 7th position, and London Heathrow Airport, Delhi Airport, and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport held the 8th, 9th, and 10th spots, respectively.

The most significant jump in the top 10 was recorded for London Heathrow, improving its ranking from the 54th position after reopening in March 2022 following two years of closures. ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira said the new rankings represent an important milestone in reaching pre-pandemic levels and reflect the resilience of the airport and aviation industry.

International Passengers

The ongoing recovery of air travel demand would not be possible without the continuous work of airports to provide a safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable air transport ecosystem for the passengers we depend on and the communities we serve.

Air cargo volumes decreased by 6.7% year-over-year, representing around 27% of the global volumes in 2022, and lost 9.9% in 2022 year-over-year. Hong Kong Airport remained in the top rank, followed by Memphis Airport and Anchorage Airport. Shanghai Pudong Airport lost its spot to ANC and ended up in the fourth position.

2022 global aircraft movements are close to 89 million, constituting a gain of 20.4% from 2021 results, representing a recovery of 82.5% from pre-pandemic levels. The top 10 airports for aircraft movements witnessed a gain of 11.4% from their 2021 results, recovering to 91.5% vis-à-vis their 2019 results.

ATL is at the top with 724 thousand movements, but still below its 2019 result of 904 thousand. ORD is in 2nd rank, followed by DFW.

The recovery of the aviation industry brings hope to travellers and the economy. With the continuous work of airports to provide a safe, secure, efficient and sustainable air transport ecosystem for passengers, we can all look forward to the future of air travel.
