This November, The Retreat Koh Chang will set the stage for the return of a remarkable cultural event as it hosts A Grand Festival of Opera, a two-day celebration of music, artistry, and Thai creative excellence. In collaboration with Opera Siam and Sinfonietta and featuring compositions by renowned Thai novelist, composer and filmmaker Somtow Sucharitkul, along with musical direction by Trisdee na Patalung, the festival will bring together some of Thailand’s most distinguished musical talents for an unforgettable experience on one of the country’s most beautiful islands.
To be held on 29–30 November 2025, the event will transform the serene beachfront setting of The Retreat Koh Chang into an open-air theatre under the stars, where nature, sound, and imagination come together. This marks a significant milestone in bringing world-class opera and orchestral performances to Thailand’s eastern coast, highlighting the nation’s thriving cultural scene and artistic innovation.
Celebrating Thai Artistry and Cultural Heritage:
Through its partnership with Opera Siam, The Retreat Koh Chang aims to position Koh Chang not only as a haven for relaxation and nature but also as an emerging destination for Thai performing arts. The festival reflects a shared vision of making culture accessible beyond urban centres, nurturing the next generation of Thai artists, and creating opportunities for audiences to experience the transformative power of live performance.

Saturday, 29 November – The Magic of Movies
The opening night, The Magic of Movies, celebrates timeless film music through the artistry of Siam Sinfonietta, Thailand’s award-winning youth orchestra, performing alongside guest vocalists. Audiences will enjoy a symphonic journey through beloved film scores — from epic cinematic classics to contemporary favourites — in a captivating open-air setting by the sea.
Sunday, 30 November – The Silent Prince
The second evening features Somtow Sucharitkul’s celebrated opera The Silent Prince, conducted by Trisdee na Patalung. Inspired by the Buddha’s path to enlightenment, this moving production from the DasJati cycle blends spirituality, storytelling, and Thai cultural resonance. Presented for the first time on Koh Chang, The Silent Prince invites audiences to experience opera that is both universal in emotion and deeply rooted in Thai heritage.
