Fiji Gateway Hotel has proudly become the first hotel in Fiji and only the fourth organisation nationwide to achieve the prestigious National 5S Certification, awarded by the Fiji National University (FNU).
The certification was formally presented to Fiji Gateway Hotel representatives at The Pearl Resort by the Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports, Mr Meli Nacuva, during the National Quality Convention earlier this month.
Recognised worldwide and originating in Japan, the 5S methodology is a workplace management and quality improvement system designed to boost efficiency, safety and innovation through five structured principles — Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, and Sustain. The certification is valid for two years and is renewed through a re-audit process to ensure continued excellence.
The 5S program at Fiji Gateway Hotel focused on the Engineering and Housekeeping departments — two areas critical to the hotel’s guest experience. Over a 15-month period, teams undertook structured training and process improvements designed to create more organised, safe and productive work environments. The results have been immediate and meaningful, with improved response times, streamlined room readiness, and enhanced service delivery.
Ms Lusi Kamanalagi, General Manager of Fiji Gateway Hotel, said the certification marks a milestone achievement for the team.
“We are incredibly proud to be the first hotel in Fiji to achieve 5S Certification. This is a testament to our team’s hard work and discipline in embracing new systems that support both professional development and service excellence. For our guests, it means an even higher standard of care and efficiency every time they stay with us.”
Mohammed Salman, Quality Assurance Officer at Fiji Gateway Hotel, who led the certification process, said the initiative has had a lasting impact on workplace culture.
“Through 5S, our team members have gained a greater sense of ownership and pride in their work. It’s more than just a management tool — it’s a mindset that drives teamwork, problem-solving and ongoing improvement.”
Julia Paradine, Group Director of Talent, Culture and Training at Raffe Hotels & Resorts, added that the 5S journey aligns perfectly with the group’s commitment to training and education.
“At Raffe Hotels & Resorts, we believe that exceptional service thrives on a culture of continuous learning. Fiji Gateway Hotel’s 5S certification exemplifies our ongoing commitment to operational excellence and to investing in the growth of our local teams.
Fiji Gateway Hotel was chosen as the pilot property within the Raffe Hotels & Resorts group to implement the 5S system. Following this success, plans are now underway to introduce the methodology at Plantation Island Resort and Lomani Island Resort & Spa, extending the culture of efficiency and quality further across the group.
This milestone not only positions Fiji Gateway Hotel as a leader in operational excellence and staff development but also provides guests with confidence that their stay is supported by internationally recognised quality management practices.
