Lambros Army - Image 1New data* released today by global travel app Skyscanner reveals an impressive 92% of Australians have either participated in or are interested in taking part in running events. And with the rise of “run travel” – combining travel with running adventures – Aussies are lacing up and chasing their next big race or trail.

Whether it’s a marathon overseas or one closer to home, Skyscanner is encouraging Aussies to embrace ‘run travel’ by discovering new destinations that elevate their running experience. With one in two Aussies planning to engage in run travel in 2025, both internationally and domestically, there’s never been a better time to explore the world on foot.

To champion the run travel movement, Skyscanner has teamed up with Australian running icons and brothers Lachlan and Stefen Lamble, founders of the Lambros Army – known for their passion for running and inspiring others to go the distance.

From rugged trails to remote terrains, the brothers have gone beyond the pavement, chasing adventure in the world’s most unexpected running spots. Lachlan and Stefan said Aussies can do the same simply by following their list of top running destinations curated exclusively for Skyscanner via a Runner’s Map.

“Whether you’re chasing a local trail or flying across the globe to explore new horizons, there’s a perfect run waiting for you. Since we first started our running journey, we’ve uncovered some of the most breathtaking paths imaginable – and we’re only just getting started,” Lachlan and Stefan Lamble said.

“Our golden rule is to run smarter, not harder. For example, if you’re navigating the rugged beauty of Dolomites in Italy or cruising through the streets of Bali in Indonesia, having the right gear – grip for trails, cushioning for roads, and all your essentials, can transform your run.

“To us, running is the ultimate way to experience and explore new places. Every route becomes an adventure. Sure, you can run faster alone – but you’ll always run further together. That’s what it’s all about: pushing yourself, soaking up the surroundings, and sharing the journey with people who inspire you,” they said.

Budget and time-savvy travellers

Almost half (45%) of Australians’ motivation behind run travel in 2025 is to explore new places, with an overwhelming 81% of Australians planning to extend their stay beyond ‘run travel’ to explore the destination further. In fact, 45% have extended their trip by three to four days.

While many Aussies are eager to explore ‘run travel’, cost remains the biggest hurdle, with 52% citing accommodation, 48% airfare, and 32% transport, as key barriers. Still, over a third (33%) are willing to spend between $2,000 and $3,000 on an overseas running holiday.

Skyscanner Travel Expert Jarrod Kris said planning a ‘run travel’ trip can be cost-efficient and easy when you know the right tips and tools.

“Skyscanner has multiple tools to help Aussies make the most of their holidays in a budget-friendly way. By planning and using features like Price Alerts and flexible date searches, travellers can find the best deals and enjoy their trips without breaking the bank.”

“Travellers can also let AI do the hard work for them. Using our Savvy Search function in the Skyscanner App, simply ask the feature where you want to travel and what running adventure you would like to embark on and within seconds, you will have a bespoke itinerary curated just for you.

“If you decide to book a run travel adventure, consider choosing a destination that includes a stopover. This provides a great opportunity to spend some time in a city you’ve been wanting to explore. Whether it’s a quick jog through a scenic park or a morning run past iconic landmarks, it adds a unique experience to your journey. Plus, opting for a non-direct flight can often be more budget-friendly, helping you save money while making the most of your travel adventure” he said.
