According to a recent survey by travel experiences platform, Klook, the vast majority of Australian & New Zealand Gen Z (84%) and Millennial (88%) travellers say they actively use travel as a way to improve their mood or mental state with 61% willing to allocate half their travel budget to experiences. The therapeutic power of travel is so compelling that 40% say they feel motivated to plan their next getaway fix within as little as a month after returning from a trip.
Klook’s Managing Director of Oceania, UK and The Americas, Henry Hooper, said: “The diverse experiences that are now easily accessible around the world means independent travellers are getting far more out of their overseas adventures than ever before.
“From pursuing personal interests, sports, and outdoor adventures in a completely different setting, to broadening horizons through a huge variety of cultural and local experiences, curated travel can be hugely advantageous to an individual’s self-care and therefore an effective form of therapy for many.”
The annual Klook Travel Pulse Survey 2025 also reveals almost two-thirds of respondents (64%) are inspired to book travel to improve their mood or mental state, while the vast majority (82%) say travel is an effective way to cope with feelings of stress. Gen Z are also significantly more likely to perceive travel as an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery (26%) compared to all people (16%).
“While we already understand younger generations in the pursuit of happiness are placing greater value on lifestyle and experiences over owning ‘things’, it’s probably not surprising Klook’s survey highlights that travel has become a ‘must-have’ rather than a ‘nice-to-have’ fixture in the calendar for so many Gen Z and Millennial Aussies and Kiwis. It’s also pleasing to see that so many travellers are focussed on maintaining their mental wellness by proactively planning their next trip from the range of possibilities around the world, Hooper, added.”
