In December 2024, the environmental management system at Discover Airlines was externally audited for the first time as part of a two-day audit and certified in accordance with the demanding European environmental management standard EMAS without any objections.
EMAS stands for Eco-Management and Audit Scheme and is a voluntary instrument of the European Union that allows companies to continuously measure and improve their environmental performance. It covers all the requirements of the environmental management standard ISO 14001, supplemented by additional requirements, in particular for the fulfilment of legal obligations.
As part of the certification, Discover Airlines is also publishing an environmental statement for the first time, based on data from 2021 to 2023, for the Frankfurt and Munich sites. The airline is thus reporting environmental impacts at all German locations retrospectively since the start of flight operations and is aligning itself with the environmental management standard common within the Lufthansa Group.
‘The introduction of an environmental management system in accordance with EMAS was the next logical step for us. Across all departments, our employees have been committed to greater sustainability from the very beginning – on the ground and on board. We are delighted that this basic attitude and the associated commitment of the workforce has now been recognised in the form of an audit and certification,’ says Bernd Bauer, CEO of Discover Airlines.
The environmental statement, including the environmental guideline, is now available on the Discover Airlines website. It will be supplemented annually with the latest figures and updated as part of the further development of the environmental management system.
