Smartraveller - logoThe Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has unveiled its 2023-24 Consular State of Play, delivering a sobering snapshot of Australians’ challenges abroad. The latest data, accessible via the Smartraveller website, highlights an alarming surge in passport-related issues, hospitalizations, arrests, and other emergencies, underscoring the critical importance of travel preparedness and vigilance.

Crisis on the Rise: Over 15,000 Australians Supported

In the past financial year, DFAT provided consular assistance to more than 15,000 Australians and their families. This support spanned multiple crises, including conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan and civil unrest in New Caledonia. These interventions demonstrate Australia’s unwavering commitment to its citizens during turbulent times.

DFAT’s Consular Emergency Centre fielded over 53,000 calls for assistance, reflecting the increasing complexity of global travel. While Australians continue to explore the world, the data reveals an unsettling trend of rising consular cases in key areas.

Key Findings: Troubling Trends in 2023-24

The Consular State of Play outlines stark increases across several categories compared to the previous year:

  • Lost Passports: Up by 31%, with 2,678 cases reported.
  • Stolen Passports: Rose by 23%, with 1,945 cases documented.
  • Illness and Hospitalization: A 21% spike, with 1,356 cases recorded.
  • Deaths Abroad: Increased by 3%, totalling 1,919 cases.
  • Drug-Related Arrests: Surged by 23%, reaching 117 cases.
  • Whereabouts Cases: Up by 24%, with 328 cases logged.
  • Theft Reports: Jumped by 26%, with 198 incidents.

Despite these increases, welfare and other serious matters saw a 10% decline, though the numbers remain significant at 2,840 cases.

Passports in High Demand

The year also saw DFAT issue over 2.5 million passports, including more than 8,000 emergency passports to Australians stranded overseas. With rising passport theft and loss, these numbers highlight the critical role of consular services in safeguarding Australians abroad.

Proactive Travel: Smartraveller’s Essential Role

DFAT’s data reinforces the importance of proactive travel planning. Australians are urged to visit Smartraveller before departure, subscribe to destination-specific updates, and maintain digital backups of travel documents. Global Context: Why the Increase?

The surge in consular cases coincides with global unrest, heightened mobility post-pandemic, and Australians’ growing appetite for travel. Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, health emergencies, and local civil unrest have contributed to the complex web of crises impacting travellers.

Conclusion: A Call for Vigilance

The 2023-24 Consular State of Play is a cautionary tale and a testament to DFAT’s vital role in protecting Australians overseas. With the world becoming increasingly unpredictable, the need for travel preparedness and robust consular services has never been more apparent.
