In a significant development for Pacific aviation, the Australian government has announced extending its support for Nauru Airlines’ “Australia-North Pacific Connector” route. The route, which connects Brisbane to key destinations across the northern and central Pacific, has been granted an additional 12 months of targeted support, now extended through October 31, 2025. This initiative underscores Australia’s commitment to bolstering essential air services that foster economic growth and connectivity for Pacific Island nations.
Bridging Key Pacific Destinations
Since its inception in October 2022, the Australia-North Pacific Connector route has provided critical air links from Brisbane to Nauru, Tarawa, Majuro, Pohnpei, and Palau. With weekly services operating via Nauru, the route offers a vital transportation lifeline for Pacific communities. This strategic air corridor connects northern and central Pacific regions with Australia, Asia, and Fiji, further enhancing regional trade, tourism, and business opportunities.
Nauru Airlines CEO Brett Gebers highlighted the importance of the route, stating, “Micronesia and the central and northern Pacific is Nauru Airline’s home, and the airline has been connecting the Islands of the Pacific, and the people of the Pacific with Australia for over 53 years.” Nauru Airlines launched its island-hopper services over a decade ago, linking Brisbane with Nauru, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Although the service paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, it resumed in 2022 as the “Australia-North Pacific Connector” under Australia’s Pacific Flights Program.
Australia’s Role in Pacific Connectivity
The Pacific Flights Program, an Australian government initiative, has played an instrumental role in supporting air links between Australia and Pacific Island nations. The renewed partnership with Nauru Airlines strengthens these connections and reinforces Australia’s commitment to fostering sustainable regional aviation infrastructure. The Australia-Pacific Partnerships for Aviation (P4A) program, which backs these air services, aims to improve aviation’s resilience, safety, and sustainability across Pacific nations.
“Air services that connect Pacific Island countries with an important partner like Australia are crucial to the region’s economic development,” Mr Gebers emphasized. “They deliver far more than visitors and tourists, also enabling trade and new business and commercial opportunities.” Gebers expressed gratitude for the Australian government’s partnership, noting that such collaboration enables the airline to sustain these essential routes, ensuring they continue to benefit Pacific communities.
A Seamless Transition for Palau Paradise Express
As part of its efforts to enhance Pacific connectivity, Nauru Airlines recently completed its contract for the Brisbane-Palau direct route, launched under the “Palau Paradise Express.” This direct service, established in partnership with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), linked Australia and Palau, creating new travel and economic opportunities for both countries.
Reflecting on the collaboration with DFAT, Mr. Gebers remarked, “We were pleased to accede to the request, and to be entrusted by DFAT to establish the route.” Brisbane-Palau flights were introduced with the support of industry partners and suppliers, allowing Nauru Airlines to meet DFAT’s strategic goals in record time. This route opened new avenues for tourism and trade, benefiting Palau’s economy and connecting Australian travellers to one of the Pacific’s most picturesque destinations.
As the contract period concludes, Nauru Airlines will transition operations of the Brisbane-Palau route to Qantas next month. Gebers expressed optimism for a smooth handover, adding, “We are delighted that national carrier Qantas will now take over operating the route next month, and we look forward to working with Qantas to manage a seamless transition with minimal disruption to passengers.”
Building a Stronger, Sustainable Future for Pacific Aviation
The Palau Paradise Express and the Australia-North Pacific Connector represent critical pillars in Australia’s P4A program, which envisions a more sustainable and resilient aviation sector for the Pacific region. By improving air connectivity, these programs are designed to strengthen “people-to-people” links, drive regional economic development, and support a sustainable travel ecosystem.
The extension of Australian support for Nauru Airlines’ Australia-North Pacific Connector highlights a shared commitment to enhancing the region’s connectivity and economic resilience. As Pacific nations continue to navigate post-pandemic recovery, the Australia-Pacific Connector route remains a powerful enabler of growth and development, bridging distances and fostering a brighter future for communities across the Pacific.
With the Australian government’s renewed support, Nauru Airlines is well-positioned to sustain its role as a critical player in Pacific aviation. The Australia-North Pacific Connector facilitates essential travel and is pivotal in building a resilient economic bridge between Australia and the Pacific. This extension is more than just a lifeline—it’s a testament to the shared vision of a prosperous, interconnected Pacific region that benefits all its inhabitants.
