Since its opening at Landmark Chater, Sotheby’s Maison has staged exhibitions, spanning millennia and more than 20 sale categories. Now, Sotheby’s is preparing to open its first major Modern and Contemporary art exhibition ahead of the inaugural evening and day sales, taking place on the 11 and 12 November.
On view will be all of this season’s offerings: led by the first major work by Mark Rothko to be offered at auction in Asia (est. HK$225-275m / US$28.9-35m), as well as an unequivocal masterpiece by Zao Wou-Ki from the artist’s Hurricane Period (est. HK$80-120m / US$10-15m) and a rare Yayoi Kusama Hat from 1980 — the first as well as largest known canvas featuring the artist’s iconic hat motif—hailing from the esteemed private collection of Dr. Ryutaro Takahashi (est. HK$38-55m / US$4.9-7.1m). The evening sale exhibition will open on the G/F of Sotheby’s Maison on 4 – 10 November 2024.
[New York sale highlights for media preview only] Highlights from the much-anticipated New York sale of the collection of beauty entrepreneur and philanthropist, Sydell Miller, include Claude Monet’s jewel-toned painting of waterlilies, Nymphéas (est. in the region of $60m), arguably one of the most celebrated themes in the history of modern art; Pablo Picasso’s first depiction of a woman artist (est. in the region of US$30m); an elegant Henri Matisse portrait from wartime France (est. US$3-5m), and Wassily Kandinsky’s vibrant and kaleidoscopic canvas (est. US$15-20m).
Stay tuned for further announcements of events at Sotheby’s Hong Kong and across Asia.
