FROM DESTRUCTION TO TRANSCENDENCE: JASON PARKER’S EXHIBITION PRESENTS A SENSORY JOURNEY THROUGH ART AND EMOTION

Hailing from New Zealand, artist Jason Parker presents his latest multi-artform exhibition, RISE, RUIN, RENEW, REPEAT, at The Stables at North Melbourne’s Meat Market. This captivating exhibition explores the duality of human nature—our capacity for destruction and our desire to transcend it.

Experience the vibrant and dynamic abstract paintings, where bold compositions and lively brushwork bring to life the interplay of colour, form, and texture. The exhibition extends to include oil paintings, concrete works, kinetic sculptures, short films and an all-encompassing soundscape. Parker’s work offers a sensory journey through his emotional and artistic exploration.

The unique warehouse-style space of The Stables, with its concrete floors and gable ceiling, will host this immersive exhibition across three areas. An urban environment with concrete and rubble creates a fragmented landscape that reflects both the resilience and impermanence of the cityscape. Here, Parker replaces canvas with concrete to symbolise the delicate nature of our society and the constructed environments we inhabit.

“While part of the work is intricate and delicate, the other is more fragmented and destructive. My intention is for guests to sense the fragility of life and see how beauty can be swiftly undone in moments of turmoil,” Parker explains.

After spending years cultivating a refined painting practice, he elaborates “…it has been thrilling to go against this nature by taking to the concrete works with a hammer to introduce an element of chaos and destruction”.

In stark contrast, the second part of the exhibition showcases large oil paintings that delve into the profound depths of dance and movement. In these moments of pure expression, we transcend the limitations of our lives and forge a connection with the divine, rising above our worst tendencies to become vessels of light.

“I aim to transport the viewer and evoke an emotional response to the best and worst that lies within us”

Visitors are invited to view a gallery of works and explore a shop featuring some of the artist’s signature  pieces, including a range of prints, pins, totes and tapestries.

Open for a limited time, the final night of the exhibition includes a special performance featuring music by Daniel O’Toole, trumpeter Fabian Acuna and contemporary dancers who are subjects of the work.
