Yesterday, Vanuatu celebrated a historic moment as the country welcomed the arrival of the inaugural Qantas flight from Brisbane to Port Vila.
The Boeing 737, inaugural Qantas flight QF159, arrived at full capacity with 180 holidaymakers and business travellers, marking a significant milestone in Vanuatu’s growing tourism sector.
There were smiles all around as passengers experienced a vibrant and traditional Vanuatu welcome as they touched down into the nation’s harbourside capital. Ni-Van warriors sounded a ceremonial conch shell as the plane landed, while local mamas had woven a stunning pandanus mat that read “Welkam to Vanuatu Qantas” adding a heartfelt touch to the occasion.
Inside the terminal, a local string band played lively tunes, and passengers were gifted traditional shell leis. Happy faces filled the meet-and-greet area, as Qantas pilots and cabin crew were warmly welcomed by Vanuatu Tourism Office dignitaries during a special ceremony on the tarmac.
The launch of Qantas’ flights from Brisbane strengthens Vanuatu’s connection with Australia, welcoming more visitors to experience the diverse islands, says Vanuatu Tourism Office CEO, Adela Issachar Aru.
“Vanuatu’s 83 islands offer real adventures, whether it’s hiking an active volcano, diving a world-famous shipwreck, or enjoying a meal of traditional lap lap dish from the local markets.”

The new direct Brisbane-Port Vila route will operate three times per week, opening up exciting opportunities for Australian travellers to immerse themselves in Vanuatu’s rich culture and natural beauty. Additional Jetstar flights from Sydney are set to commence in December, further boosting accessibility.
