Air New Zealand LogoIn an extraordinary display of compassion and corporate social responsibility, Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner embarked on a heartwarming mission that transcended the typical boundaries of aviation.

On a crisp Saturday afternoon, this state-of-the-art aircraft took to the skies for a particular charter flight, carrying 50 children from the Koru Care charity on a breathtaking scenic journey over New Zealand’s South Island.

A Tradition of Dream Fulfillment

For over four decades, Air New Zealand has partnered with Koru Care, a charity devoted to creating unforgettable experiences for children facing serious medical challenges or disabilities. This enduring collaboration has helped thousands of young New Zealanders experience the magic of travel, often for the first time. This recent flight was another testament to the airline’s unwavering commitment to making dreams take flight.

The flight, designated NZ8477, departed Christchurch at approximately 1:30 PM, beginning a carefully planned route that showcased the most spectacular vistas of the South Island. The Dreamliner soared over Queenstown’s majestic landscapes before heading further south and then turning up the East Coast, offering the children onboard a bird’ s-eye view of Dunedin’s picturesque coastlines. The flight concluded with a return to Christchurch just after 3:00 PM, leaving the young passengers with memories they will cherish forever.

Air New Zealand’s Chief Pilot, Captain David Morgan, who had the honour of being in the cockpit, described the flight as an unparalleled opportunity for the young VIPs—affectionately referred to as the “NZVIPS”—and for aviation enthusiasts on the ground.

“It was fantastic to be able to give children who may not have the opportunity to travel overseas the thrill of flying on one of our larger international aircraft, over some of the world’s most stunning scenery right here at home,” Captain Morgan stated. “It’s not every day a 787 Dreamliner circles the South Island, so we couldn’t resist giving a friendly wave to everyone down below as we soared overhead.”

Before the flight, the children were treated to an immersive pre-flight party at Christchurch Airport, themed ‘Around the World in a Day.’ This vibrant event featured stations inspired by global destinations like New York, Tokyo, Fiji, and Sydney, complete with themed food, activities, and entertainment that brought the world’s cultures to life right in the airport terminal.

Stars in the Sky and Hearts on the Ground

One of the most touching moments of the day they have occurred onboard the flight, where each child received a certificate revealing that a star in the sky had been officially named in their honour. This symbolic gesture added a cosmic touch to an already magical day, emphasizing that these children are stars in every sense.

Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran, who joined the flight, spoke passionately about the significance of this long-standing tradition. “The Koru Care flight is a cherished tradition within our airline. It’s a small way for us to provide a special experience for children who aren’t usually able to travel offshore due to medical conditions or family situations,” Foran remarked. “The day was a heartwarming reminder of the magic and wonder of flying, and it was an absolute privilege to welcome our Little Stars onboard.”

A Legacy of Care and Commitment

Tracey Curran of Koru Care NZ highlighted the enduring relationship between the charity and the airline, expressing profound gratitude for the unwavering support. “Air New Zealand has consistently gone above and beyond to make these dreams come true, and this flight was no exception,” Curran stated.

In addition to providing this once-in-a-lifetime experience, Air New Zealand also demonstrated its commitment to sustainability. The airline announced that it would offset the flight’s emissions through carbon credits and make a koha (donation) to projects supporting biodiversity in Aotearoa, ensuring that this memorable day also had a positive impact on the environment.

About Koru Care

A group of dedicated volunteers from Air New Zealand originally founded Koru Care. It has grown into an official charity with four branches across New Zealand. Each branch operates independently and is managed by volunteers who organize fundraising efforts to support children in their regions. Over the years, more than 2,000 children with various illnesses and disabilities have flown with Air New Zealand, experiencing the joy of travel and creating cherished memories that might have otherwise remained out of reach.
