Continuing on a proud tradition, the Gympie Music Muster will provide on-the-job experience for TAFE Queensland, Brisbane sound production students this year.

For more than 25 years, students from TAFE Queensland’s Southbank campus enhance their classroom experience and put it into use, assisting with sound and lighting throughout the Muster venues.

It is a great opportunity for the Diploma of Music – Sound Production students from Brisbane to work on a world-class event.

“It is a unique experience for the students,” Sound production teacher Heath Storrie said.

“It provides a very immersive learning environment and the students skill sets increase quite rapidly over the course of the week. We are excited to have the opportunity presented once again for what is a very long history with the festival.”

They will work with Steve Grimes from IJS Productions and his crew.

Mr Storrie completed the course in 1999 and has worked on-and-off as a member of the audio production crew since 2011.

Camping onsite, the students are involved from whoa to go, installing audio, lighting, vision and backline prior to the Muster.  They set up and patch microphones and assist artists and backline with changeovers.  They also gain an invaluable insight into live mixing practices during the festival, and then finally assist with bump-out.

Mr Storrie said, being part of the full process meant the students get a realistic insight into what is involved in an event the scale of the Muster.

The experience has led to professional opportunities for many students, with some graduates of the course now working at the muster as part of the professional crew.
