Australian flag carrier Qantas is actively advocating for Australians to claim their $400 million worth of unused travel credits amassed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In June, Qantas initiated an online tool, Find My Credit, which aims to assist clients in locating their cancelled bookings from as far back as 2020, rendered void by repeated and sudden border closures. Along with this tool, Qantas introduced a lucrative Double Qantas Points offer for any bookings made using these travel credits this month.
The airline has further streamlined the process of acquiring refunds before the expiry of these credits on 31st December 2023. Until now, over $1 billion has been redeemed across Qantas and its subsidiary, Jetstar.
Since the latter part of June, numerous customers have registered to avail themselves of the Double Points offer using the COVID credits. However, an astonishing amount of travel credits is still unclaimed. The Find My Credit tool has already proven its worth, with over 20,000 customers successfully reuniting with their bookings. Refund inquiries have also seen a significant surge.
Qantas has rolled out an expansive advertising campaign across radio and newspapers to remind their customer base about the unclaimed COVID-era credits, the redemption options, and the impending expiry. Regular emails are also dispatched to all those holding credits.
Passengers can book their journeys before the end of this year and can plan their travel up to December 2024.
Qantas Group’s Chief Customer Officer, Markus Svensson, urged customers to capitalize on the Double Points offer and schedule vacations. “Several of these credits have languished for years, often between $100 and $500. Understandably, they’re not at the forefront of everyone’s minds,” Mr Svensson admitted.
The airline has shown its commitment to reaching out to its customers proactively, particularly as the expiration date of these credits nears. A special hotline and a new online tool have been set up to simplify locating COVID-era credits and streamlining refunds.
Qantas’ dedicated Travel Credits Concierge Team is readily available at 1300 171 505 for further assistance. To take advantage of the Double Points offer, customers must register at qantas.com/doubleqantaspoints and book an eligible flight bearing a QF flight number by 31st July 2023. Double points will be credited to their account eight weeks after the journey.
Ultimately, while Qantas’ push aims to reunite passengers with their credits, it’s more than just about money. It’s about rekindling travel passions and reestablishing connections in a world recovering from the global pandemic.
