In a turn of the tide, TravelManagers, one of Australia’s leading full-service travel agencies, is witnessing an unprecedented surge in demand for cruise holidays in 2023. Lia Malone, Cruise Product Manager of TravelManagers, reported a staggering 95% increase in their annual cruise sales volume in the first five months compared to the same period in the preceding year. The company also experienced consistent month-on-month growth throughout 2023.
“The figures we’re seeing are indicative of a renewed interest in cruise holidays,” says Malone. “The thrill of being out on the open ocean is once again making waves in the Australian tourism sector.”
Interestingly, the growth in the cruise sector is not only attributable to the increased number of bookings, which have risen by a healthy 13% in 2023. Malone emphasizes a remarkable 71% increase in the average value per booking. She interprets this as a sign that customers seek more luxurious cruise experiences.
“Investing in an elevated cruise holiday experience is the new trend. Clients are upgrading their stateroom choices and opting for all-inclusive pricing options. Verandah or balcony staterooms are particularly popular,” Malone explains.
Moreover, river cruising, offering a smaller ship format and a more intimate, all-inclusive experience, is a preferred choice among TravelManagers’ clientele. With its rich historical heritage and romantic riverscapes, Europe has emerged as one of the hottest cruise destinations. Sales for this region have reportedly doubled compared with the same period last year.
“Cruises based in Australia also significantly contribute to our growth,” Malone adds. The increased number of cruise ships making their maiden voyage to Australia signifies the rising popularity of the land Down Under as a cruise destination.
Current booking trends reveal that most customers make their advance bookings within six to twelve months. However, the consistency of forward bookings extending beyond twelve months shows a sustained interest in future cruising plans.
Complementing the heightened demand for cruises this year, Malone also notes a surge in new cruise customers referred by their personal travel managers (PTMs). “This speaks volumes about our PTMs’ expertise in delivering exceptional service and matching each client with their ideal cruise experience.”
