Refugee Chef Banquets Held Monthly in Sydney’s Newtown

It’s Refugee Week, so we’re shining a light on the monthly Refugee Chef Dinner Banquets hosted by Local Sauce Tours. Held at Parliament on King in Sydney’s Newtown, the evening is a pro-bono initiative for Local Sauce Tours, with all proceeds going towards the chefs and the venue’s important work in supporting refugees… all year round.

Guests sample food from the homelands of asylum seekers and refugees – think Burmese/Rohingya, Iraqi, Iranian, Palestinian, Nepali, Sri Lankan, Ugandan and more. Each month’s banquet has a different chef and menu, often kept a surprise until the night.

The venue’s mission is to make lovely food, whilst addressing economic, social and cultural barriers for asylum seekers and refugees by providing real work, training and community. The Local Sauce Tours host invites chefs to share stories of their journey to Australia and their food, with guests provided an opportunity to ask their own questions.

Set in the front room of the bohemian café, up to 14 people enjoy exclusive use of the cozy space. The sell-out dinners cost from $70 per person and include a three-course banquet and welcome drink, with additional drinks available for purchase. Vegetarians, vegans and dietary requirements are welcome with prior notice. Photos and further resources are shared with the group following the experience.

The dinners suit all ages (over 12 recommended) and are ideal for solo guests, couples, small groups of friends, and families. Groups generally consist mostly of locals with some visitors to Sydney. The event can be booked exclusively at a separate date for groups of at least 10 people.
