Centara Hotels & Resorts, Thailand’s premier hotel operator, reaffirms its unwavering dedication to sustainability by unveiling the relaunch of its successful and groundbreaking ‘Plastics Only, Please’ (P-O-P) campaign from 2019. In a bold move to combat plastic waste, Centara will introduce wire sculptures of marine life, aptly named P-O-P creatures, across all its properties as an innovative means to raise awareness and promote proactive action. This initiative, coinciding with World Environment Day on June 5th and Ocean Day on June 8th, will run from the 5th to the 30th of June 2023.
Emphasizing its ongoing commitment to sustainable practices, Centara invites guests and staff members alike to participate in the P-O-P campaign by collecting plastic refuse and “feeding” it to the insatiable wire sculptures. Centara’s waste management teams will empty the sculptures weekly, weigh the collected trash, and prepare it for appropriate sorting and delivery to local recycling facilities. The 2019 edition of the ‘plastic-eating’ sculptures managed to amass an impressive 400 kilograms of plastic waste. This initiative alleviated the environmental burden by diverting plastic from local landfills and ensured the proper recycling and reuse of plastic materials that would have otherwise been discarded.
David Good, the Executive Vice President of Hotel Operations for Centara Hotels & Resorts, expressed the company’s strong commitment to sustainability, stating, “At Centara, we firmly believe in transforming environmental awareness into tangible actions. Building on the resounding success of our ‘Plastics Only, Please’ campaign in 2019, we eagerly anticipate surpassing our achievements this year with an array of captivating P-O-P sculptures gracing our magnificent beachfront properties. We encourage guests, staff, and all individuals who encounter plastic waste to join forces with us and collectively combat plastic pollution under our #BeatPlasticPollution banner.”
The P-O-P campaign aligns with the overarching global movement to curb plastic pollution, as exemplified by World Environment Day’s “Solutions to Plastic Pollution #BeatPlasticPollution” initiative and the World Ocean Day campaign. This concerted effort to reduce plastic waste has gained significant momentum recently, with Centara actively contributing to the cause. By 2025, Centara aims to obtain certification from recognized accreditation bodies for all its properties, marking a crucial milestone in the organization’s long-term sustainability goals. Eliminating single-use plastic items such as drinking straws, laundry bags, takeaway food containers, plastic bottles in fitness centres and poolside areas, and plastic guest room amenities will significantly minimize the ecological footprint throughout the guest journey.
