Douglas QuinbyDiscover the latest insights into the future of travel experiences in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region with Arival’s groundbreaking research. The leading authority in the tours and activities sector, Arival, has unveiled six key trends that are set to shape the travel industry’s recovery and redefine how we explore APAC. As countries gradually reopen their borders after the pandemic, APAC is experiencing a surge of renewed interest in travel and tourism, with travellers from the region spending more, venturing further, and extending their journeys.

Arival’s CEO and co-founder, Douglas Quinby, highlights the essential experience trends that creators and sellers of tours, activities, and attractions should closely monitor:

  1. A Very Uneven Recovery, The pace of recovery across APAC varies significantly. While specific markets, such as Southeast Asia, Korea, and Australia, are witnessing a solid comeback, others, like China and Japan, are slower to return to pre-pandemic levels.
  2. Intra-Regional Travel Takes the Lead, Followed by Long-Haul and Europe Travelers in Asia have begun exploring regional destinations. Still, it won’t be long before they set their sights on long-haul trips, including popular European destinations. Operators and resellers are already noting an increased demand for European experiences.
  3. The Return of Outbound Chinese Travellers Poses a Wild Card China has been a major driving force behind the growth of the travel industry. While domestic travel has largely recovered, the revival of international outbound travel has been sluggish. Operators in the region should prioritize other source markets in APAC while preparing for China’s anticipated return in the second half of 2023. Chief Strategy Officer of Asia-based DidaTravel, Eric Zhuang, emphasized adapting to shifting preferences and changing consumer behaviours.
  4. Younger Travelers Redefine the Rebound The recovery of the travel industry in Asia is being shaped by Generation Z and younger Millennials. This experience-driven demographic prioritizes unique and immersive experiences over material possessions. Operators must cater to this trend by offering small-group tours and immersive activities with memorable interactions and off-the-beaten-path adventures. Additionally, ensuring mobile accessibility for bookings and creating Instagram- and TikTok-worthy moments are vital for capturing their attention.
  5. Mobile Booking and Online Marketplaces Surge in Market Share As younger travellers spearhead the rebound, operators must embrace the mobile wave. According to Klook’s Chief Commercial Officer, Wilfred Fan, mobile bookings have already seen a staggering 120% growth above pre-pandemic levels. The rise of mobile booking and online marketplaces is set to triple by 2025, making it crucial for operators to adapt and provide seamless mobile experiences.
  6. Small Group and Independent Travel Redefine, the Future of Travel in Asia Younger travellers seek independence and adventure, favouring small group tours, independent itineraries, outdoor activities, and unique experiences. These travel enthusiasts eagerly share their cherished moments with family and friends. Operators should focus on providing personalized and immersive experiences that align with this evolving trend.
