The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has recently announced a promotional campaign in collaboration with Air Macau, offering tourists a ‘Buy One Get One Free’ deal for air, bus and ferry tickets. The promotion aims to attract foreign tourists to visit the city after years of travel restrictions due to the pandemic. This move comes as the government loosens anti-epidemic measures, signalling a push towards revitalising the tourism industry.
From now until June 30, 2023, tourists can take advantage of the limited-time offer when they purchase a round-trip ticket from Air Macau, departing from Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Thailand or Vietnam, with Macao as the destination. The promotion is also extended to public transport operators, where tourists who stay overnight in Macao can receive free return tickets, encouraging longer stays.
The ‘Macao Treat’ programme, in collaboration with HK-MO Express, One Bus Hong Kong Macau, Eternal East Cross-Border Coach, TurboJet and Cotai Water Jet, covers land and water transport, allowing tourists to access various destinations in Macao with ease.
The city’s vibrant culinary scene, blending Portuguese and Chinese heritage, is one of the key attractions for tourists. UNESCO recognised Macao as a ‘Creative City of Gastronomy’ in 2017, highlighting the city’s diverse cuisine. With the ongoing ‘Experience Macao, Unlimited’ campaign, tourists can indulge in themed events that showcase the city’s culture and arts. The monthly themes include ‘Spring into Arts’ for April, ‘May there be FUN’ for May, ‘Tasty June’ for June, ‘Summer Heat is On’ for July and August, ‘Autumn Delights’ for September, ‘Festive October’ for October, ‘November Formula’ for November and ‘Dazzling Winter’ for December.
The ‘Buy One Get One Free’ offer is available for Hong Kong residents, Taiwanese or international tourists visiting Hong Kong. The promotion aims to attract foreign tourists to visit Macao, promoting the city as a must-visit destination in Asia.
Tourism significantly contributes to the city’s economy, making up approximately 90% of the industry. However, the pandemic has caused a significant downturn in tourism, with visitor arrivals dropping by 93.7% in 2020. The government hopes that the promotional campaign and the recent loosening of anti-epidemic measures can revive the tourism industry, creating job opportunities and stimulating economic growth.
