Intrepid, a leading adventure travel company, is set to launch a new expedition to Timor-Leste in 2023. This unique trip is specially designed to explore the local way of life and the undiscovered land of Southeast Asia’s newest and least-visited destination.
The 9-day fully inclusive trip includes transportation, accommodation, activities, and meals, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in the Timorese culture and wildlife. Intrepid’s mission is to provide unique experiences in less-frequented parts of the world, and this trip does exactly that, offering a chance to discover new opportunities for adventure and connection.
The itinerary was developed in partnership with the Market Development Facility (MDF), an initiative promoting sustainable economic growth in the region. The goal is to support local communities and expand the potential of tourism in Southeast Asia by offering alternative destinations for culturally rich and wildlife-dense adventure travel experiences.
The first departure for Intrepid’s 9-Day Timor-Leste Expedition is scheduled for October 15, 2023. The itinerary includes various highlights, such as hiking to the summit of Mt Ramelau, the tallest mountain in Timor-Leste, at sunrise. Snorkelling from local fishermen’s boats at Atauro Island, a global hotspot for whales and dolphins, is also on the list, along with experiencing Timorese hospitality and daily life through a local homestay.
Travellers will also get the opportunity to explore the capital of Dili, sample traditional food, visit the Tais market to learn about traditional textiles, and understand the country’s complicated history through several tours and museum and cemetery stops. The trip also includes visiting local coffee farms, plantations, and cafes to learn how coffee is produced and understand its importance to the local culture.
Furthermore, the trip includes visiting several social enterprises dedicated to supporting and empowering the people of Timor-Leste, including the Alola Foundation. This NGO aims to improve the lives of women and children by addressing problems relating to education, economic development, maternal and child health, and gender inequality.
Timor-Leste, the only Asian country entirely in the Southern Hemisphere, gained independence in 2002 after centuries of colonialism. This developing nation is home to a unique set of traditions and beliefs influenced by many distinct cultures. The country is well known for its unmatched natural beauty, boasting stunning beaches, towering mountains, untouched coral reefs, and a wide range of endemic species, including sea turtles, rare spotted cuscus, monkeys, and tokays, one of the world’s largest lizards.
Intrepid’s new Timor-Leste Expedition offers a rare opportunity to explore Southeast Asia’s newest and least-visited destination, a country with a rich culture and natural beauty that few have had the chance to experience. By partnering with MDF and promoting sustainable tourism practices, Intrepid is also supporting the local communities and economies of Timor-Leste.
In conclusion, Intrepid’s new Timor-Leste Expedition is a fantastic opportunity for adventure travellers to discover a unique destination that few have visited before. The trip offers a diverse range of activities, including hiking, snorkelling, and exploring local communities, all while supporting sustainable tourism practices and empowering the people of Timor-Leste.
