Our Digital Landscape: Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, Digital Refugees, and Digital BridgesAs Australia prepares to welcome 195,000 permanent migrants in 2023, Immigration to Australia, an immigration assistance and advice platform, conducted an independent survey of 1002 Australian residents to determine the best cities in Australia for immigrants to settle in permanently. The survey asked respondents to rate eight key factors of habitability: welcoming to residents, the potential for business success, family-friendly, value, lifestyle, well-paying jobs, climate, and safety.

The results revealed that while Sydney and Melbourne are popular destinations for tourists and immigrants alike, they may not be the best location for permanent settlement. Brisbane and Melbourne emerged as the top two cities, with Brisbane taking the lead in categories such as lifestyle, climate, and value, while Melbourne was voted the most welcoming city for immigrants and the top family-friendly city.

Surprisingly, Sydney did not rank first in any category but was voted the top city for well-paying jobs. Meanwhile, Adelaide emerged as the best-value city, and Hobart was voted the safest city for immigration in Australia. Darwin and Perth did not rank first in any category.

The survey results challenge the assumption that the most popular cities are always the best option for immigrants. Despite receiving the second lowest intake of immigrants among Australian capital cities, Hobart emerged as the safest city for immigration, while Brisbane received only 16,191 international immigrants in 2019-20 despite being voted the best city for lifestyle and climate by a significant margin.

The survey results have important implications for policymakers and businesses alike. With the Australian Government increasing its intake of permanent migrants to fill skills shortages in the labour market and improve the productive capacity of the economy, it is crucial to consider which cities offer the best opportunities for immigrants to thrive.

Immigration to Australia calls on policymakers and businesses to take note of the survey results and work towards creating a more welcoming environment for immigrants in all Australian cities. By prioritizing the needs and preferences of immigrants, Australia can continue to attract top talent and strengthen its economy for years to come.
