The MSC Group and the MSC Foundation have once again demonstrated their commitment to providing relief aid in times of crisis by organizing a swift response to the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria. The earthquake that hit these countries has caused significant devastation, leaving many families homeless and in dire need of help.
On 16th February, MSC Aurelia, a passenger and vehicle ferry, departed from the Port of Naples loaded with 60 pallets of basic necessities, medical supplies, food, hygiene items, warm clothing, blankets, and toys for children. The ship will dock in the port of Iskenderun in Turkey, where it will provide emergency accommodation for those impacted by the earthquake. Additionally, MSC will be providing thousands of empty containers to accommodate families who have been displaced in the hardest-hit provinces of Turkey, including Adıyaman, Gaziantep, Hatay, and Kahramanmaraş.
In partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the MSC Foundation has arranged for the dispatch of 100 containers carrying first aid supplies, including blankets, mattresses, sleeping bags, kitchen sets, jerry cans, and lamps. The containers, which are departing from Jordan via Haifa, will be destined for Gaziantep and other cities hit hardest by the earthquake and will be at the disposal of relief workers who are already on site caring for survivors.
MSC Türkiye has also set up temporary accommodation at Iskenderun port using empty containers for 300 MSC Group employees and their families who lost their homes in the earthquake. Additionally, MSC Türkiye is arranging for the distribution of food, beverages, and items to meet basic needs.
The support of the MSC Group and the MSC Foundation includes a global fundraising campaign among employees of the group. Every donation by an employee of MSC will be matched by the MSC Foundation and used to support organizations working on reconstruction projects in Turkey and Syria.
The MSC Foundation’s Executive Director, Daniela Picco, has expressed a sense of obligation to act promptly in order to support the people most in need by all means. She said that the MSC Group is part of a global organization that can set in motion a large-scale operation by involving foundations and associations that they collaborate with all around the world. Picco stated that as soon as the earthquake in Turkey and Syria struck, they immediately took action to collect funds, supplies, and food, which they could deliver on their ships within a short period of time.
Mariavittoria Rava, President of the Francesca Rava Foundation, expressed solidarity with the children and families affected by the earthquake. She said that in emergencies, the Francesca Rava Foundation’s goal is to act quickly and in agreement with local institutions and partners. Rava expressed gratitude to the MSC Foundation for the valuable synergy, which allows them to bring further concrete help to the earthquake victims.
In conclusion, the MSC Group and the MSC Foundation have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to supporting communities impacted by natural disasters. Their efforts in providing aid and assistance to the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria have undoubtedly made a significant difference in the lives of those affected. The global fundraising campaign is an excellent opportunity for employees to participate in this humanitarian effort and provide support to the organizations working on reconstruction projects in Turkey and Syria.
