Untravelled Paths are delighted to announce that construction for the Hotel of Ice began last week on the 28th of November which is the earliest construction start date since the hotel’s conception in 2006. This means the hotel will be operational as scheduled for its opening on the 20th of December.

The construction process illustrated by the accompanying video is relatively straightforward. Once the weather is consistently below freezing the construction can start. First, they construct a wooden mold for the walls of the igloo structure. Then they fill this manually with snow, adding cold water with a hose to help turn the snow to ice. Once the 2-metre-high ice walls have been completed, a steel curved igloo roof is placed on top where the construction team adds snow and a sprinkling of water until the entire structure sets. Once the structure has set, they remove all the wood and steel support before taking Ice from the nearby lake to complete the ice furniture inside.
The Hotel of Ice season is expected to run until the 16th of April. It’s situated in the Carpathian Mountains by Balea Lake at 2,034m and is only reachable by cable car. The Hotel of Ice has a minimum of 8 bedrooms but may increase up to 16 bedrooms if required. Along with the 8 bedrooms, it also has an Ice Restaurant & Bar where guests can enjoy a 4-course meal for 60 Euros per person (about £52). During the day visitors can enjoy the neighbouring chalet and winter park with an array of activities.
