Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, offering 7,000 acres of Caribbean living in the Dominican Republic countryside, celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Amphitheater at Altos de Chavon. The 5,000-seat outdoor theater, located within the property’s replica 16th century Mediterranean village created by Paramount Pictures, has welcomed more than 200 shows and more than 500 artists and performers over the last 40 years.

On August 20, 1982, the amphitheater hosted HBO’s “Concert for the Americas” special, headlined by Frank Sinatra. Two days later, the amphitheater welcomed Carlos Santana and the band Heart, and three years later, Wilfrido Vargas became the first Dominican artist to perform at the Amphitheater to a sold-out concert on April 26, 1985. In the years that followed, the amphitheater hosted star-studded performances from the likes of Elton John, Gloria Estefan, Sting, Andrea Bocelli, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, and many more.

“We are honored to be able to celebrate the past 40 years of historic concerts & performances in our iconic and one-of-a-kind Amphitheater,” said Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Jason Kycek. “Over the last four decades, the legendary Amphitheater of Chavon has become such a pivotal part of the Casa de Campo experience, and we are elated to commemorate and share all of the past performers, artists and guests who have experienced the magic of the Amphitheater over the last 40 years.”

To celebrate the exciting milestone, Casa de Campo Resort & Villas will be putting on a series of concerts reminiscent of years past, featuring a Frank Sinatra tribute band, historical art exhibition, and the return of Wilfrido Vargas after his first performance 37 years ago. The schedule of free events includes:

  • “40 Laps Around the Sun” Art Exhibition (10/21 to 11/21): Hosted at the Altos de Chavon Art Gallery, guests can take a walk down memory lane to admire original and one-of-a-kind posters of all the past performances at the Amphitheater including Frank Sinatra, Sting, Heart, Depeche Mode, and many more. Exhibition offerings include a cocktail inauguration exhibition and a Frank Sinatra concert film screening.
  • “Sinatra, El Tributo” Concert (10/22): This tribute concert for the legendary Frank Sinatra, who inaugurated the Amphitheater, will be performed by the Santo Domingo Pops, a big band orchestra under the direction of Amaury Sanchez, Dominican producer.
  • Wilfrido Vargas Concert (11/4): This band leader is one of the most celebrated Dominican merengue musicians and was instrumental in making the Merengue style a world phenomenon. On November 4, Wilfrido Vargas will return to the Amphitheater to perform his repertoire of energetic merengue music, 37 years after his original performance.

Meticulously designed by Dominican architect, Jose Antonio Caro, and Italian master designer and cinematographer, Roberto Coppa, every detail of Altos de Chavón was handcrafted by local artisans, and the amphitheater is no exception. The village is a cultural center for residents, tourists, and working artists from all over the world. Active studios for artists of every medium from pottery to weaving, silk screening, and everything in between line the cobblestone streets alongside shops and boutiques showcasing their unique creations. The Art Gallery features works from noted Dominican artists, as well as artists from around the world which helps to foster a dialogue of creativity and cultural exchange. Altos de Chavón is also home to the renowned Altos de Chavón School of Design, which is affiliated with the Parsons School of Design in New York.
