The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) announced today the artists to exhibit in Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists – Sundari Carmody (SA), Angela Goh (NSW), Julia Gutman (NSW), Amrita Hepi (VIC), Jazz Money (NSW), and Katie West (VIC WA).
Opening on Friday 4 November until Sunday 12 February 2023, Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists presents work by a new generation of artists. Created during the global pandemic and widespread social upheaval, the artists draw upon mediums from choreography to moving image to refocus our attention to the here and now, focusing on the what, how, who and why of our present moment.
Primavera is the MCA’s annual exhibition of emerging artists living and working in Australia, aged 35 years and under. Now in its 31st edition, Primavera continues to be a significant platform for early-career Australian artists and curators to present exciting new work.
This year’s Primavera exhibition is curated by Sydney-based curator, Micheal Do. Do is a curator, programmer and writer working across Australia, New Zealand and Asia. He is the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Sydney Opera House, Australia and Curator of Projects at Auckland Art Fair, New Zealand. He was the 2018 recipient of the Freedman Foundation’s Travelling Scholarship for Curators and the recipient of the Museums and Galleries NSW Artist and Curator Residency Grant in 2016.
On the exhibition, Curator Micheal Do, said: “Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists is bound together by the overwhelming sense that we have inherited, and continue to live through, a global requiem. From the ecological emergency, to the rise of far-right politics, the continued subjugation of First Nations people, and the global pandemic, our recent history is gravid with loss and suffering.
Rather than simply making objects, in Primavera 2022 artists have responded with processes of questioning and discussion, broadly asking how we should live and navigate this requiem?”
For Primavera 2022, Do brings together an exhibition that embraces each artist’s unique approach to making. The exhibiting artists will present work of various media including poetry, choreography, scent, weaving, moving image and installation.
MCA Director, Suzanne Cotter said: “Micheal Do has curated an exceptional group of artists for Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists. This exhibition is an important platform for artists’ careers, introducing their work to a wider audience in Australia.”
The MCA has produced a publication to accompany Primavera 2022 which will be available during the exhibition.
Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists is a free exhibition on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Level 1 South Gallery, from Friday 4 November 2022 – 12 February 2023.
