Silversea® celebrated its collaboration with renowned photographer Steve McCurry in Australia last week.Silversea hosted intimate, invitational screenings in Melbourne and Sydney of the feature-length documentary by award-winning filmmaker Denis Delestrac, McCurry: The Pursuit of Color.
Delestrac’s documentary unveils an intimate portrayal of the celebrated photojournalist and his global voyages with Silversea to Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, and Bhutan, among others.
A post-screening Q&A with Steve McCurry was hosted by respected Australian journalist Jenny Brockie (Insight, SBS and Four Corners, ABC). Brockie offered insight into Steve’s peripatetic life and defining forty-year career.
The discussion began with his formative years in India and time as a war photographer, before speaking about his experiences closer to home with his wife Andie and daughter Lucia–who were at his side in Australia to celebrate both the film premiere and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
“Steve McCurry’s voice in contemporary photography is unparalleled and Silversea knew there was no one more qualified to chronicle its ongoing mission to discover the authentic beauty in the far-flung corners of the world,” Silversea Managing Director Asia Pacific Adam Radwanski said.
McCurry captures the reality of conflict, vanishing civilisations, ancient traditions, and contemporary culture throughout the world. Yet despite the variety of his work, the human element, and his ability to capture it, has always remained at its core. Notably, his renowned 1984 photograph, The Afghan Girl, showcased his ability to highlight the stark reality of those who would otherwise remain unnoticed.
“Steve is known for his haunting portrait of a green-eyed Afghan refugee girl in National Geographic; however, it has been exciting to bear witness to Steve’s ongoing artistic journey” Radwanski added.
Additional screenings will be held nationwide over the next month. Silversea invites trade partners, travel agents and Venetian Society members to share in the authentic experience of McCurry: the Pursuit of Color.
