Tintsaba produces some of the best handmade baskets in the world, alongside other beautiful products based on sisal, a sustainable weed which grows naturally in Eswatini. They have now launched an exciting tour which takes you out of the city and straight into the beautiful Eswatini Mountains to have a unique and informative experience at their workshops.
Tintsaba was founded by the late Sheila Freemantle in 1985 with a vision to work with the women of rural Eswatini in order for them to grow in personal and financial independence. Visitors can now take the new workshop tour to see first hand how everything is created and learn all about the history and background of the company.
You will have the opportunity to see how the sisal fibre is extracted from the agave plant, the dye processes and Tintsaba’s special colour combinations. The production department will then show you some of the many different items and works of art that 776 women produce. One of Tintsaba’s master weavers will be there to show you the coiled basket technique and their sterling silver smith will show you how unique their jewellery is, even incorporating basketry into all pieces. You can even try you hand at some of the aspects of the weaving!
The tour is free on weekdays (24 hr notice needed) and just R50 pp at weekends (5 days notice needed). Individuals or (small + big) groups are welcome. Refreshments are provided.
