Programme
+1 Presents: Kit Sebastian / Saturday, 5 March, 22.00
Kit Sebastian was founded by Kit Martin and Merve Erdem in 2018 in London. Martin is a multi-instrumentalist who has been involved in music since the age of 12. He showed his talents at the age of 15 with the first LP he released with his teenage band. He currently works at his analogue studio near London and records all the instruments for Kit Sebastian. Born in Istanbul, Merve Erdem studied film in Rome, lived and worked in the US and finally settled in the UK. She writes and sings for Kit Sebastian, and is largely responsible for the band’s captivating videos. The duo recorded their first album ‘Mantra Moderne’ in almost one sitting, in only 12 hours, and their Pitchfork-rated second album ‘Melody’ came in 2021. They sing in Turkish, English and French, and although they approach all genres with a slight sarcasm, they never compromise on exoticism. Kit Sebastian may as well be the discovery of the year.
+1 Presents: Seafret / Thursday, 10 March, 21.30 & Friday, 11 March, 22.00
They released their first EP ‘Give me Something’ in 2014 and the second EP ‘Oceans’ in 2015. Seafret made a big breakthrough in 2015 with the video clip for their single ‘Oceans’ starring Maisie Williams, Arya from Game of Thrones. The clip was viewed more than 66 million times on YouTube, and the single was played over 74 million times on Spotify. Their debut studio album ‘Tell Me It’s Real’ is full with the air of the northern shores of England where they were born and raised, and peaked at no. 59 on UK Albums Chart, expanding their fan base significantly. They received a loving welcome for their indie-pop with heart-wrenching vocals. In September 2018 they renewed their musical identities with a grander structure in their new EP ‘Monsters’. Their new single ‘Loving You’, due to be released in February 2019, heralds a new period and a brand new album from Seafret, as well as a song that will take the headlines on playlists for listeners. Among the favourites of Peçeteye İstek (Song Request on Napkin) of Salon, Seafret will be at Salon İKSV for a third time to reunite with their Istanbul audience.
+1 Presents: Palmiyeler / Saturday, 12 March, 22.00
Mertcan Mertbilek and Tarık Töre, who we know from Kilink, brought California Sound together with the palm trees of İzmir, and with the added contribution of Barış Konyalı and Rana Uludağ, Palmiyeler emerged as a cheerful and highly energetic band that guarantees you won’t be able to sit still. Since the summer of 2015, everyone in need of serotonin has met up with the band, as their boundless energy on stage has turned into an organic anti-depressant for the fans. The Palmiyeler story started with their self-titled EP released in 2015. They’ve entered our favourite playlists with ‘II (Venus)’ in 2017, and ‘Akdeniz’ in 2018. Towards the end of 2019, a Palmiyeler breeze was in the air again with consequent EPs. They opened the Babe Rainbow concert the same year and later on, filled Salon alone in February 2020. Since then, the band has released ‘Ben-Hür’ and ‘Şeytan Odama Geldi’ that each demonstrate how much they have refined their skills. After a two-year hiatus, it’s their Salon turn again.
+1 Presents: Jakuzi / Friday, 18 March & Saturday, 19 March, 22.00
Formed in 2016, Jakuzi triggered the long-expected, grand Istanbul earthquake in the music industry with the video for their first single ‘Koca Bir Saçmalık’. They released their first album ‘Fantezi Müzik’ on cassette tape through Domuz Records and soon became darlings of the local scene. Without missing a beat, they made a splash internationally as well, and signed with Berlin-based City Slang Records, also extending their reach overseas. They gave the first concert of their second album, ‘Hata Payı’, at Salon in 2019, and they are here with us again in the new season of Salon; after an EP (Açık Yara) and their new year gift ‘Merasim’.
+1 Presents: Other Lives / Thursday, 23 March, 21.30 & Friday, 24 March, 22.00
After releasing their first album ‘Other Lives’ in 2009, the band’s breakthrough came with ‘Tamer Animals’ in 2011, which was followed by a few festival appearances and an extensive world tour in 2012. Released in 2015, the third album ‘Rituals’ has become an even more complex record, which strongly refers back to the time when they were still an instrumental band. The band, whose music embodies an insatiable hunger for musical precision and absolute clarity of sound, manages to merge indie with minimalist rhythms stupendously. Thom Yorke is a fan of the band that was an opening act of many Radiohead concerts. They also appeared at the Coachella Festival the same year. An all multi-instrumentalist band, Other Lives will perform for the first time in Turkey on April 22 and 23 at Salon.
+1 Presents: Islandman / Saturday, 26 March, 22.00
Chasing new and exotic timbres by infusing their music with the vibrations of time, Islandman’s each stage performance provides a new space for exploration. Discovered in 2016 by the Danish indie label Music for Dreams, the band released their debut album ‘Rest in Space’ in 2017 following their EP ‘Ağıt’. Started as the solo project of Tolga Böyük, Islandman evolved into a multi-instrumentalist trio that brings listeners all around the world the sounds of Anatolian psychedelic. Having travelled the sonic grounds that stretch from Istanbul to North Africa, Tibet and Mongolia in their third and latest album ‘Godless Ceremony’, Islandman brings their shamanic performance to Salon.
+1 Presents: Ghostly Kisses / Thursday, 31 March, 21.30 & Friday, 1 April, 22.00
Music has always been around Margaux Sauvé, born in Quebec to a family of musicians. She picked up the violin at the tender age of five. Moving on to the conservatoire in Quebec, she quit but still loved music so started to play violin in local bands. The pop music on the radio whilst growing up in Quebec wasn’t connecting with her, so she did her own. After a series of sorrowful but exploratory EPs, she released her mesmeric debut album ‘Heaven, Wait’ in 2022. She describes the album, which she recorded with her partner (in music and in life) Louis-Étienne Santais, as moving from the dark to the light. It offers a compelling snapshot of grief, growth and desire. Ghostly Kisses can be traced back to Röyksopp’s ‘Running To The Sea’ and London Grammar – Margaux first learned to sing by trying to imitate Hannah Reid, a gateway to discovering her own way of singing. You can practice for the concert by listening to the cover of The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’.
+1 Presents: Noga Erez / Friday, 13 May & Saturday, 14 May, 22.00
Noga Erez burst onto the scene with her debut album ‘Off The Radar’ in 2017, winning acclaim across the globe. While the music she makes in collaboration with her partner and co-producer Ori Rousso, exploits many of the more physical, dynamic elements of electronic, hip-hop and pop music, it also embraces a cerebral sensitivity that’s made her one of her home city’s most exciting, idiosyncratic artists. The grainy textures and potent atmospheres forged with her synths and ingenious beats bravely straddle various genres. Her 2018 standalone singles “Bad Habits” and “Cash Out (feat. SAMMUS)”, and 2019 collaboration with ECHO, “Chin Chin” as well as her 2021 album, ‘KIDS’, saw her continuing to forge a path of uncompromising and unpredictable, gritty, truth-seeking alt-pop.
+1 Presents: Lola Marsh / Thursday, 19 May, 21.30 & Friday, 20 May, 22.00
Origins of Lola Marsh were laid during a party where Gil Landau and Yael Shoshana Cohen bored and had a chat about music. The duo took action like lightning, and their debut single “Sirens” and worldwide popular second single “You’re Mine” were released in 2015. Following festival outings and huge media interest, they joined the Universal Music family. Their EP also titled “You’re Mine” came right away. According to Nylon Magazine, they have a nostalgic indie sound that could well be a soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s next film.
+1 Presents: Jonathan Bree / Saturday, 28 May, 22.00
Jonathan Bree began writing his own songs at age 9 and performed live as a drummer in his cousin’s band until age 13. This was interrupted after being sent to live in Australia with his father, who was an aspiring cult leader. Bree subsequently left home and independently navigated his teenage years. When Bree returned to New Zealand, he formed The Brunettes, who in their active years toured the world and released music. When he finally returned to releasing his own music, it was as a solo artist with the album, ‘The Primrose Path’ (2013). His only promotion for it was uploading to YouTube an album length video of himself watching shows on his laptop in bed accompanied by his girlfriend and cat. To date, Bree released four studio albums, including ‘Sleepwalking’ (2018) with the leading single of “You’re So Cool” which was named Time Out New York’s Video of the Year.
