Jessica Husson and Joan Alemany were strangers when they set off on an epic 50-day, five-continent adventure – and that was exactly how each of them wanted it. The pair were the winners of TourRadar’s Tour the World contest and had never met before setting off on an around-the-world trip together. While it may seem to some as a recipe for disaster, the interactive video series following the pair tells a very different story.

“It’s been really exciting to witness Jessica and Joan’s solo adventures unfold,” says Christian Wolters, Managing Director of North America at TourRadar. “Watching the Tour the World episodes, you can see all the emotions that come from traveling with strangers — and how your experience is really influenced by the people you travel with.”

TourRadar, the world’s largest online travel agency for multi-day tours, has found that solo travelers make up the largest sector of bookings on its platform, marking a 551% increase in solo bookings compared to 2016.

TourRadar also found that the kinds of trips being booked most often by solo travelers tend to be to places that would be challenging to tackle on one’s own. The most popular solo tours explore places like India, the Philippines, and Egypt, indicating that most solo travelers are now relying on multi-day group tours to get them where they want to go.

“The fact that so many solo travelers are booking tours proves that solo trips aren’t just for the seasoned traveler anymore,” Wolters says. “Solo travel experiences are actually elevated thanks to the ease, accessibility and safety of group tours.”
