Spread the love

As families gear up to get away these holidays, it’s likely outdoor leisure will be a feature as parents and kids look to enjoy the outdoors and what our nation has to offer.

Whether you’re taking a road trip across our great backyard, going off-grid, camping or simply doing day trips in the car or boat, Australia’s leading battery retailer, Battery World is offering some handy tips to keep you and your gear powered over the break.

Check your batteries

A battery is a bit like a muscle: use it or lose it. Some of you may be looking to dust off the old boat or start up the campervan after a few long months in the shed, but even a month of not being used can cause problems.

If a vehicle is not being driven, the battery will naturally lose charge causing sulphation and acid stratification that can lead to reduced performance and premature battery failure. 85 per cent of early battery failures are due to undercharged batteries that rapidly deteriorates the internals resulting in the need to buy a new one.

If you are storing a marine battery, it needs to be fully charged, and if you missed the boat on this one during isolation, you’ll likely need a replacement.

The power needs for camping or marine are different to automotive. Boats and RVs with additional accessories need to be fitted with a Dual Battery System. The dual battery system isolates the starter battery to ensure sufficient power to start the vehicle and prevents it from going flat, while the deep cycle battery powers your fridges, lights, and other camping gadgets.

Before you embark on your holidays, head into your local Battery World store, and we’ll test your batteries for free to ensure they are in peak condition and won’t let you down when you’re taking time out with friends and family.

 Need a deep-cycle battery?

If camping or boating is on your holiday to-do list, it is worth investing in a quality deep cycle battery that will meet your power needs. There are many different types of deep cycle batteries to choose from these days from the regular flooded types, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), Gel Electrolyte, and lithium all with varying capabilities and suitability for your needs…so we urge buyers to beware!

The internet is full of misleading information with sales pitches and ‘too good to be true’ gimmicks confusing the consumer. If you want the right advice, we recommend visiting your local Battery World store to get some expert advice on what you really need to suit your requirements and budget.

Improve your fridge efficiency

If you are camping, a fridge will likely be the most demanding of all the appliances you hook up to your 12-volt system.

To ensure your fridge is working to the best of its abilities, make sure:

  • To keep the fridge full as it’ll help keep the temperature more stable as the chilled contents act like a big ice block;
  • A fridge temperature should sit at around 3°C – any colder will make the fridge work up to four times harder to keep cool;
  • Keep the fridge in a dry shaded area away from direct sunlight;
  • Leave enough space around your fridge with plenty of ventilation to help the heat from the condenser dissipate;
  • If your fridge is installed in a 4×4 or camper, when parked make sure to choose a shady location and crack open some windows or doors to let the air flow so it doesn’t make your fridge go into overdrive to cool down.

Taking these simple steps will make a significant difference when you’re out on the road or in a remote location these holidays.
