Over the next couple weeks, our new portrait series will spotlight essential workers who have been keeping Lower Manhattan functioning every day. First up is a drugstore on Broadway: The Alliance spoke to the store manager about how he and his staff are staying upbeat while staying safe.

‘Everyone’s Really Caring About Each Other’ In A Downtown Drugstore

The Walgreens/Duane Reade at 250 Broadway usually serves thousands each day. But since New York City’s necessary pause, things feel different along that stretch of Broadway. Store Manager Arssath Uthumalebbe (pictured, right) gave us a first-hand view of how neighbors cope with the new (if temporary) normal. “Everyone is really listening to what they’re supposed to do,” Uthumalebbe told the Alliance. “Everyone’s really caring about each other.” Read the full profile here.

PSA: Leo’s Bagels Has Reopened And Is Ready To Serve Up Perfection

A gut yontif to those of you going the unleavened route this week, though you may want to bookmark this public service announcement: Leo’s Bagels is now back in action every day, 7a–2p. Owner Adam Pomerantz had temporarily locked the doors on March 20. “There was so much uncertainty at that point,” Pomerantz told the Alliance, “and I was concerned with keeping my employees and customers safe while also doing my part to stop the spread of the coronavirus.”

After giving the store at 3 Hanover Square a thorough cleaning and sanitizing, management drafted a plan to keep operating. “I’m confident and hopeful that we will be able to serve up our bagels while keeping everyone safe,” Pomerantz said.

$20 For Hand Sanitizer? Here’s How To Report Price Gouging.

The city is cracking down on price gouging during the pandemic. Upping price tags on stuff like hand sanitizer, face masks and gloves isn’t just wrong; an emergency rule issued by the city on March 16 also made hiking prices of 10 percent or more illegal. If you suspect coronavirus-related price gouging, you can contact 311.
