Rathmore is a picture-perfect historic farm stay property an hour from Hobart with a Georgian homestead,  revived shearers’ quarters and rustic cottages accommodating up to 25 guests.

It’s also one of Tassie’s best spots to see up to seven elusive and near-threatened platypus. Rathmore’s expansive lake, fed by the Dew Rivulet is home to a paddle of the iconic mammals and guests are encouraged to take up an oar in the property’s private row boat or kayak to spy them.

It’s simply part of the authentic, old-fashioned country hospitality that guests experience with hosts Richard and Cally Lyons.

The beautifully restored 1828 Rathmore House offers four guestrooms with private use bathrooms available, period dining room, sitting room, scullery and conservatory. While over at the former Shearers’ Quarters there’s room for four couples, families or large groups thanks to a master bedroom with private-use bathroom and three deluxe rooms with en-suites, all with access to a messroom with fireplace, Wi-fi and laundry facilities.

For a rustic stay for up to six guests, opt for the former Shearer’s Cooks’ house, a one-bedroom cottage with twin single beds (originally shearer’s stretchers) and a double sofa bed in the living area.

There’s a range of catering options at hand, from formal dining experiences to campfire cook ups of succulent Rathmore grass-fed lamb or beef followed by complimentary marshmallows to toast over the coals. For those self-catering, breakfast provisions with homemade jams are a staple with leaf teas and ground coffee. With enough notice, Cally can even arrange hampers of cheese and charcuterie platters for a rustic lunch in the barn, sumptuous Stables long lunch or campfire dinner or an insta-worthy picnic along the banks of the rivulet.

Rathmore now offers Safe Stays with plenty of space to social distance across its 37 hectares and guaranteed private-use bathrooms.

At Rathmore time stands still, so unwind properly and go fishing for trout, take a guided bushwalk or just sit back and wombat watch. At night, there’s always the stars to count as this is nature at its best.
