A soon-to-open Las Vegas museum dedicated to cannabis has unveiled the world’s biggest bong, a marijuana pipe called Bongzilla, as promoters prepare for Vegas to turn into “the new Amsterdam of the world”.

The bong is so enormous it requires a lift to convey people from the ground floor. The marijuana museum (opening 20 September 2018) is called Cannabition.

Bongzilla is mainly for show, because while Nevada made recreational marijuana legal last year, it can be consumed only in private residences. So charging punters for a smoke is out of the question, at the moment, anyway – although Las Vegas has a history of backing enterprises that make money.

Jason Harris, the artist who made seven-metre-tall Bongzilla, told the Los Angeles Times that Las Vegas was set to become “the new Amsterdam of the world.” Nevada lawmaker Tick Segerblom, who championed the legalisation of recreational marijuana in Nevada, agrees and has used the same phrase about Amsterdam.

The Las Vegas Cannabition Cannabis Museum also features a 50-metre-long mural depicting cannabis history, 12 exhibit rooms, a retail store with marijuana paraphernalia, an array of marijuana-related products and a full bar.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that Cannabition Cannabis Museum will be open from 4.20pm till midnight, with admission USD 24.20 for visitors and USD 14.20 for Nevada residents. A VIP package is available for USD 42.

In a coincidence that suits the promoters, the Nevada Department of Taxation this week disclosed that for the first full financial year since legalisation, marijuana sales delivered USD 69.8 million in tax, beating forecasts by 40%. Total sales in the state – including medical marijuana and related goods – topped half a billion dollars (USD 529.9 million) for the fiscal year.
