Get set to have QR codes become even more firmly entrenched in our lives, especially in travel, with their already in my opinion, having become a very important and justifiable part of our lives in shops, cafes, restaurants and in fact, anywhere else, you wish to enter.

The Federal Government has now revealed that it is rolling out a new QR code-based vaccination certificate system within months, which is based on the Visible Digital Seal technology backed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The plan is reported to have been approved by the Government’s expenditure review committee, following a proposal submitted jointly by the Federal Ministers for Health, Employment, Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs.

The vaccine certificate developed by Services Australia and scheduled to be implemented as soon as October is also part of a deal Services Australia announced with Apple and Google to allow digital wallets on smartphones, including Apple and Android.

The ICAO Visible Digital Seal system is said to ensure that your vaccine certificate cannot be faked by using a so-called “cryptographic signature”, with the Government also apparently proposing the system could be used for domestic travel, thereby enabling quarantine-free trips for vaccinated passengers.

In addition, it appears that the same technology and platform could be used by events operators and for entry to venues, with similar technology already being implemented in some European countries, including France.

The technology could apparently also be used for international travel with discussions with several countries regarding two-way travel bubbles using the vaccination certificates reported to already be underway.
