Powerhouse Tamworth & Powerhouse Armidale Recognised In Australia’s Wine List Of The Year Awards 2020

Following the completion of multi-million dollar renovations at the Powerhouse Hotel Tamworth by Rydges to deliver the first five-star hotel to the New England, hotelier Greg Maguire has rounded out 2020 with his two regional NSW hotel properties earning a coveted 2 Glass rating in the prestigious Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards.

The Workshop Kitchen at Powerhouse Tamworth by Rydges and Azka Restaurant, Wine & Tapas Bar at Powerhouse Armidale by Rydges have both been celebrated in Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards in 2020, the only restaurants in the New England region to be awarded.

The win was the fourth for Powerhouse Tamworth, coming on the back of three consecutive years  in Australia’s Wine List of the Year. The judges recognised sommelier Daine Cooper again in 2020 with a wine list that celebrates the local region as well as a strong vegan, organic and biodynamic offering, well-known international makers, rare Australian icons and a superb selection of Penfolds Grange.

In a first for Powerhouse Armidale, the work of sommelier Monty Maguire in Azka Restaurant, Wine & Tapas Bar was also awarded with the judges impressed by the range and dimension of offering in a remote country locale – from established international winemakers to modestly priced lesser known gems.

Established in 1994 by Tucker Seabrook, Sydney’s first wine and spirit merchant, Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards recognise and reward the enormous investment by restaurant owners, managers and sommeliers in the time, skill and resources that go into developing the best quality wine lists and cellars.  At the same time the awards pay tribute to the dedication and talent of those individuals who create these lists for Australia’s best restaurants, hotels, clubs, wine bars, pubs and cafes – large and small.

Greg Maguire, owner of Powerhouse Hotels Group said, “We are honoured to be acknowledged in such a respected and prestigious national award program for our continued efforts to celebrate and support fine winemaking, in Australia and around the world.

“Our vision is to offer an experience – within our hotels, at our restaurants and with our food and beverage destinations – that is sophisticated and exciting and stands alongside some of the best restaurant and hospitality experiences both here and around the globe.

“In a year that has been challenging for everyone, we continue to support our local and regional suppliers while also bringing some of the best wine and spirits from around the world to the region, for the local community and visitors to Tamworth and Armidale to enjoy but also to play our role in positioning New England as a destination for first-class tourism and experiences”.
