As the world enters the 5G era, the 6th Taipei 5G Summit, directed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and hosted by the 5G Office, was held at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) on May 30. With more than 400 participants, the event was themed Readiness for 5G—Technology, Service, and Policy and showcased Taiwan’s 5G strength. Official representatives of 5G communications development from the UK, Japan, and Indian telecom operator Reliance Jio were invited to the Summit to participate in the international 5G integration platform and lay a foundation for future procurement, technical exchanges, application development, and other opportunities for international manufacturers, such as exploring Taiwan’s business opportunities in the 5G industry and expanding future innovative applications in areas like smart medical care, smart factory, unmanned vehicle, smart entertainment, and smart exhibition hall.

Minister John-Chin Shen of the Ministry of Economic Affairs said in his opening speech that this year marks the first year of global 5G commercial development, and that the key of the 5G industry is applications. The Ministry of Economic Affairs initiated two 5G national teams, led by the leading telecommunications companies of Chunghwa Telecom and FarEastone. They are tasked with developing applications in entertainment and smart automobile areas, respectively. At the same time, the Ministry of Economic Affairs is actively discussing with TAITRA the deployment of a 5G network in the Nangang Exhibition Center, so that international buyers can experience the innovative services of Taiwan’s smart exhibition centers. In addition, there are also discussions with Tri-Service General Hospital regarding smart medical applications such as 5G Mixed Reality (MR) technology that enables instant remote consultation. They are also actively promoting international cooperations, including a 5G cooperation plan with the EU that has entered a new phase this year. It is expected field and smart factory applications and UAV projects will begin in October. Minister Shen encourages more domestic and foreign partners to cooperate and create global business opportunities for the diversified development of 5G.

For this Summit, the director of the Mobile Communication Division of MIC Japan, Mr. Koichi Katagiri, was invited to share Japan’s planning spectrum and commercialization process, and the CTO of Ofcom, Mr. Mansoor Hanif, was invited to share information on 5G development in Europe. Renowned domestic and international telecommunication company representatives, including senior VP of Intel, Ms. Jennifer Panhorst; president of Supermicro, Mr. Charles Liang; CTO of Reliance Jio, Mr. Pankaj Sharma; and chairman of Asia Pacific Telecom, Mr. Fang-Ming Lu, were invited to deliver keynote speeches on the latest global 5G development trends and the current status of global 5G vertical field technology and innovative application services. Red Hat, Quanta, and Cisco were also invited to discuss cloud transformation of the 5G system, virtualization, and open source architecture migration, as well as system construction achievements by telecom operators.

Based on the theme of the Summit, Intel, Supermicro, FET, Keysight Technologies, Quanta Computer, Viavi Solutions, Rohde & Schwarz, MediaTek, and other manufacturers presented their latest research and development achievements, including 5G, combined AI and smart edge computing technology applied in industrial production line detection simulations, a 5G NR test platform, production line communication test instruments, and other related solutions. In addition, ITRI and III project teams of the Taiwan 5G Alliance, supervised by MOEA, exhibited their self-developed 5G private network system combining 8K VR360 live broadcast and VR community application that enhances the onsite experience of participants, plus the 8K image quality provides a more realistic and clear presentation of the details.

With its powerful advantages of being faster, more stable and able to meet the needs of different communication scenarios, 5G communication technology is setting off a new digital industrial revolution. Its application will be integrated into our future lives, from autonomous vehicles to smart factories and VR applications to remote medical surgery and so on. Any field that deals with big data will be dependent on 5G technology. In the wave of the communication revolution, Taiwan will keep pace with the rest of the world, utilizing strong manufacturing advantages and research and development strength to promote steady development in this industry. The 6th Taipei 5G Summit successfully provided an international 5G integration platform, facilitating close interactions and exchanges between Taiwan manufacturers and major international manufacturers, as well as exploring 5G business opportunities. Taiwan has won international recognition for its innovative technology, attracting IEEE GLOBECOM of ISO to Taiwan in December 2020. In parallel, the 7th Taipei 5G Summit will be jointly held at that time to showcase Taiwan’s achievements and contributions in 5G communications and expand international business opportunities.
