Following the completion of demolition work, main construction works are well underway on The Star Gold Coast’s second $400 million hotel and apartment tower, with piling taking place to lay the foundations for the soaring 63-storey development.

Expected to open in 2024, the tower is located on the most south-eastern part of Broadbeach Island and will feature 210 five-star hotel rooms plus 457 apartments that will form part of ‘The Star Residences Gold Coast’.

It is the second tower in an expanded masterplan for The Star Gold Coast with the inaugural 53-storey tower – featuring Australia’s first Dorsett hotel and 422 apartments – currently up to pouring the slab for level 41, remaining on track for completion early next year.

The expanded masterplan is being delivered by Destination Gold Coast Consortium (DGCC), a joint venture between parent company, The Star Entertainment Group, and its two partners, Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium.

The expanded masterplan comprises a total of five additional towers and associated resort amenities to be developed on the island, subject to market and competitor conditions.

DGCC Project Director Jaime Cali said the 200 metre-plus tall tower will require more than 32,000m3 of concrete – enough to fill 17 Olympic sized swimming pools – to build, as well as over 8000 tonnes of reinforcing steel and more than 22,000m2 of window glazing.

“This second hotel and apartment tower is a significant development that will provide great job opportunities here on the Gold Coast,” Ms Cali said.

“We have 60 workers on site currently undertaking the piling and in-ground activities that will prepare the site for above-ground column construction.

“However, construction on the whole tower is expected to deliver 1800 direct and indirect jobs, reaching peak construction in 2023 when the tower is expected to require more than 500 people on site.”

Ms Cali said the piling work, which began in late March and will continue until mid June, is an exciting milestone as it signifies that demolition is over and the appointed contractor, Multiplex, is now focused on the physical build of the tower.

“In total, we’re drilling around 280 piles into the ground, each one ranging up to around 40 metres in length and up to over a metre in diameter,” Ms Cali said.

“Three drill rigs have been used to dig the holes for the piles, extracting dirt on the way and filling the holes with concrete, with the largest rig weighing over 100 tonnes and using a 40 metre long drill.

“Once all the piling has been completed, a 2.5 metre thick concrete raft slab will be poured, creating the base slab for the tower with further slabs, or levels, to continue being built well into 2023.

“The first columns will be installed along Casino Drive mid year to form part of the new tower’s car park being constructed above Casino Drive.

“This new car park is being built within our six-level podium structure, and will feature more than 310 car parks in total, as well as dedicated bicycle spaces for residents.”

Already 76 per cent of the one, two, and three-bedroom apartments in the second tower have been sold since pre-sales began in May 2019. Only two-bedroom apartments remain with prices ranging from $710,000 to around $1.1 million.

By the time the second tower opens in 2024, The Star Gold Coast will hit a landmark by becoming the first integrated resort in Australia to offer four hotels, comprising close to 1200 hotel rooms and suites.

In addition, the integrated resort will also provide nearly 900 apartments, enabling guests to enjoy all the comforts of luxurious apartment-living for the first time.

Both the first and second hotel and apartment towers will offer direct connectivity to The Star Gold Coast’s other integrated resort offerings and will feature a total of more than 12,050sqm additional retail and resort facilities.
