In a stunning result during the most challenging year on record for cruising, Australia’s largest cruise organisation, Carnival Australia, has been elevated to the top ten workplaces in Australia in this year’s Great Place to Work benchmarking program.Carnival Australia, which accounts for seven iconic cruise lines — P&O Cruises Australia, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Cunard, Holland America Line, Seabourn and P&O Cruises World Cruising — achieved the high ranking based on the program’s company wide survey of employees.

Amid the ongoing uncertainty associated with the worldwide suspension of cruising due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a resounding 94 per cent of the Carnival Australia team rated it a great place to work — five per cent higher than when surveyed two years ago.

Carnival Australia improved in all the dimensions measured and, reflecting the team’s mutual respect and support for each other during such a difficult period, ‘camaraderie’ was the highest rating dimension at 94 per cent, a six per cent rise.

Commenting on the Great Place to Work results, Sture Myrmell, President of Carnival Australia and P&O Cruises Australia, said he had never felt more proud of the team than when he saw the results of the study.

“In so many respects, the survey is a well-deserved accolade for the entire Carnival Australia team who have all stood by each other with courage, resilience, professionalism and, very importantly, optimism for what we know will be a brighter future,” Mr Myrmell said.

“In spite of such a challenging period, our team has never lost sight of the objective of resuming cruise operations as soon as we can, always placing our guests at the centre of everything we do.

“As an organisation, we have worked very hard to maintain a workplace that encourages our people to achieve their best. It takes people with very special character and qualities to maintain such high standards while navigating a period of uncertainty and disruption.

“We are an intensely customer focused organisation and Carnival Australia’s honour is also a tribute to our loyal guests who have maintained their faith in our brands as we continue to work towards the restart of cruising.”

Highlighting Carnival Australia’s strong company culture and the team’s loyalty to each other, the Great Place to Work survey found that:

● 97 per cent said ‘people care about each other here’
● 95 per cent said ‘this is a fun place to work’
● 94 per cent said ‘I can be myself around here’

A great place to work is defined as one in which employees trust the people they work for and have pride in what they do and enjoy the people with whom they work.

The survey probes employee relationships with their management, colleagues and work. The dimensions measured are credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.

“I have always been optimistic about the recovery and resurgence of cruising but after seeing the results of the Great Place to Work survey, I have never been more confident that we have the right people to lead the restart of cruise operations,” Mr Myrmell said.

In 2019, Carnival Australia ranked in the top 20 best places to work in the Great Place to Work survey of participating Australian companies.
