The Governor-General David Hurley has paid Thredbo a special visit today to show support for the Snowy Mountains community.

The visit comes after a difficult 12 months for the region, which has seen the community recover from bushfires and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thredbo General Manager Stuart Diver hosted the Governor-General and Mrs Linda Hurley for a morning tea at Eagles Nest Restaurant, Australia’s highest restaurant.

Their Excellencies were joined by members of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council, including representatives from the other New South Wales snowfields, Tourism Snowy Mountains, local business owners and media.

Mr Diver welcomed the visit from Their Excellencies and said the morning tea was a great chance for members of the Snowy Mountains region to speak with the Governor-General about their experiences.

“After a challenging year for the region, today was a wonderful opportunity for the Governor-General to hear first-hand the impacts of the bushfires and COVID-19 from local businesses who have been affected and to also see just how much we have to offer here in one of the most beautiful tourism destinations in Australia,” Mr Diver said.

Despite the challenges of bushfires and COVID-19, Thredbo has had one of its most successful summer seasons on record with domestic travellers taking advantage of the wide-open spaces and fresh air the mountains have to offer.

“After the bushfires last year, we’ve been fortunate to welcome guests back to Thredbo this summer to enjoy mountain biking and hiking adventures. We’re grateful to all of our guests who have supported us and other local businesses during this time,” Mr Diver said.

Australia’s premier year-round adventure destination is now planning for its 2021 winter season with the official start to the winter season on 12 June 2021.

The resort will continue to operate under its revised COVID-19 operating plan that has been developed under the advice of the NSW Department of Health. The revised model includes a range of social distancing, hygiene and sanitisation measures.
