Jennifer Cheung is the General Manager of EAST, Hong Kong, having joined as part of the pre-opening team in 2008. Over the last decade, Jennifer has made it her mission to make EAST, Hong Kong as sustainable as possible, and is continually exploring new ways to make this vision a reality.

Championing sustainability efforts at property level last year, Jennifer led the EAST, Hong Kong team to join the “No Straw Campaign” by Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, banning straws from Feast and Sugar. The hotel also teamed up with World Wildlife Fund to participate in Sustainable Seafood Week, creating a sustainable seafood menu using only ingredients that were approved by WWF and certified by MSC or ASC as ocean-friendly. EAST, Hong Kong has also worked with Foodlink Foundation, who aim to fight hunger by donating unused food to those in need.

Jennifer also oversees the recycling initiatives at EAST, Hong Kong. Employees and guests are
encouraged to follow suit with the Go Green Program, whereby a Go Green card is placed in the room to encourage guests to change their linens and towels when needed. EAST, Hong Kong also uses measuring tools to monitor the amount of waste generated, in addition to flow controllers in the guest rooms to enhance water use efficiency. Throughout 2019, EAST, Hong Kong environmental initiatives include installing a filtered water tap in guest rooms, as well as a water dispenser in the gym, to reduce the use of plastic water bottles.

Believing in the importance of minimizing the hotel industry’s carbon footprint, Jennifer is also highly involved in the sustainability movements taken by Swire Hotels as a whole. Jennifer is a representative for the group at Hotel Owners for Tomorrow, a movement that rallies thousands of hotel owners across the world to demonstrate their commitment to helping the planet and its people. Since 2017, Jennifer has been invited as a guest speaker for the Hong Kong University Corporate Environmental Governance Programme, where she shares her insights on sustainable development within the hospitality industry. “I feel our role in protecting this world should be embraced by everyone as a sense of responsibility for our future generations. It is through the communication of these ideas that will motivate the individual to make subtle changes in their lives and that to me is the greatest reward of all.”

By 2020, EAST, Hong Kong aims to follow through with SD 2030, strategies developed by Swire
Properties Ltd to become the leading sustainable development performer in the industry by 2030
aiming to save 20% water consumption compared to 2016 reduce the use of electricity by 26% and to ensure that 25% of all waste is recyclable.
