February 9, 2022 Visit Turkey No Comments

gray and black train traveling on top of bridge during daytimeİKSV began its activities in 1972 when Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı’s dream for a festival for Istanbul was realised. The foundation is preparing to vitalise the cultural and artistic life of Istanbul for the 50th time in 2022.

The foundation started its journey with a single Istanbul Festival and in the last 50 years, it has hosted more than twelve million spectators at thousands of events organised in the fields of contemporary and classical music, cinema, performing arts, contemporary art, and design. İKSV has contributed to the foundation and appreciation of the festival and biennial organisations in Turkey. İKSV has hosted the world’s leading artists and ensembles in Istanbul and has organised events abroad that reflect Turkey’s artistic production. It has contributed to strengthening Turkey’s international ties through culture and art. In addition to providing support through awards and production grants, it has supported art and artists with commissioned works. İKSV has also worked for the development of cultural policies, diversification and strengthening of cultural management by conducting research, preparing reports and collaboration projects.

Everyone is invited to join the 50th anniversary celebrations

İKSV will be celebrating its 50th anniversary with concerts organised in collaboration with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality at various parks in Istanbul on the evening of Sunday, June 5. These free-of-charge concerts will be open to the public for all Istanbulites to attend.

İKSV will continue to meet with Istanbulites during June and July with free classical music and jazz concerts that will be organised in different parks and outdoor venues of Istanbul, from Beylikdüzü to Yıldız Park, from Küçükçekmece to Museum Gazhane.

2022 will be the year of İKSV

İKSV will celebrate its 50th anniversary with film screenings, concerts, exhibitions, performances, workshops, interviews and different events spread throughout the year.

The Istanbul Film, Music, Jazz and Theatre Festivals will create a festive atmosphere in the city all year round. Filmekimi will brighten up cinemas during autumn. The Pavilion of Turkey at la Biennale di Venezia and the Istanbul Biennial will once again place Turkey at the centre of the international art agenda.

Salon İKSV, located in the Nejat Eczacıbaşı Building, will reopen its doors in March after a two-year hiatus. In addition, Salon İKSV will be moving to Parkorman with a two-day festival as Gezgin Salon.

Our audience will meet Anna Karenina performed by the Zurich Ballet, organised in cooperation with İKSV and Zorlu PSM. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, whose legendary Istanbul concert in 2018 still lingers in our minds, will also be among the guests of İKSV’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

İKSV Alt Kat will continue to contribute to the artistic development of young people and children with its activities spread throughout the year.

 Two new theatrical productions

On its 50th anniversary, İKSV is launching two new theatrical productions. “Alelade Aşıklardan Farkımız” will be a “musical theatre show” directed by Özen Yula which is based on the correspondences of Sabahattin Ali and Aliye Ali.

İKSV, ID Communications and Zorlu PSM will co-produce a contemporary adaptation of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s iconic novel “The Time Regulation Institute”, which will be directed by Serdar Biliş. Both shows will premiere in the autumn of 2022.

İKSV’s 10th cultural policy report focuses on gender equality

İKSV takes social and environmental welfare into account as it prepares for the future. After last year’s cultural policy report, “Arts and Culture for Ecological Transformation”, İKSV focuses on gender equality in the field this year. In the report to be written by Prof. Itır Erhart and published by the Cultural Policy Studies department in March, a debate on gender equality in culture and arts will be carried out.

İKSV Chairman Bülent Eczacıbaşı: “Our top priority in the period ahead is to ensure that culture and arts will flourish in the future.”

İKSV Chairman Bülent Eczacıbaşı made the following statement with respect to İKSV’s 50th anniversary and its plans for the future: “We truly believe that a rich and colourful culture and art life in Istanbul is critical not just for nurturing the development of creative thinking but also for enabling society and individuals to pause, breathe, and become happier. Our country has a very rich culture and art tradition. Cultural institutions like İKSV have the important task of ensuring the continuity, productivity and creativity of this tradition, and in this endeavour, our most powerful resource is young people. Drawing strength from İKSV’s many achievements during its first 50 years, we are focusing now on young people and the future. We will continue to reward and support young artists and to open new spaces for them. We will work harder to include more young people in our activities. We must contribute hope and inspiration to the lives of young people through culture and arts, and supporting new production is vital in this regard. For this reason, we are working on new initiatives for İKSV’s 50th anniversary. Our top priority in the period ahead is to support the development of both artists and audiences to ensure that culture and arts will flourish in the future.”

Student tickets for all İKSV events are 10 TRY

İKSV presents the Eczacıbaşı Young Ticket Project, with the support of the founding sponsor of the Foundation, Eczacıbaşı Group, which will be celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2022. Student ticket prices at all İKSV events will be fixed at 10 TRY.

50th year exclusive: İKSV from past to present

 @İKSV_Albümleri

İKSV, in honour of its 50th anniversary, prepares to share photos, documents and memories from its institutional archives with viewers via social media. Through the @İKSV_Albümleri Instagram account, albums carefully preserved since 1972 will be taken down from their shelves, and everyone who is part of this experience will be invited to leaf through the pages together.

Upcycled totes from İKSV’s past

İKSV will implement another very special project for its 50th year. The promotional vinyl banner leftovers from past İKSV festivals and biennials have been recycled and upcycled into İKSV totes of two sizes. Each tote, designed by Hüner Aldemir, will be unique and one of a kind. İKSV totes will be available at magaza.iksv.org in February.

Thank you!

İKSV would like to extend its gratitude to the institutions and organizations, Tulip Card members, viewers, artists, members of the press and all its employees who have put supporting culture and art among their priorities for the last 50 years. We would like to thank the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, all of our sponsors, our corporate, individual, public and international supporters and patrons who contributed to the work of İKSV.

Wishing us many 50 years together…gray and black train traveling on top of bridge during daytime
