Capturing the rich aromas of a market favourite

October 17, 2018 Headline News No Comments

The flavours and stories from one of Australia’s oldest and most iconic markets have been captured in a book celebrating its first 150 years.

Originally a meeting place for disgruntled South Australian market gardeners, the Adelaide Central Market’s evolution towards the melting pot of aromas, culture and cuisine that it is today began in 1869.

Now with more than 70 traders selling a variety of produce from fruit and veg to smallgoods, seafood, meat and cheese, the Market has become one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere.

The hardcover book has been launched ahead of the market’s 150thanniversary celebrations next year and features almost 500 pages of stories, images, and 136 seasonal recipes from some of its most famous stallholders.

It also includes personal anecdotes and tips and tricks to provide knowledge, inspiration and education around the offerings of seasonal produce.

Much loved by South Australians, the city market is one of Adelaide’s leading tourist attractions for visitors the world over.

Adelaide Central Market Authority Chair Dr Nick Begakis said the book celebrating the market’s decorated history would appeal to an international audience.

“This book brilliantly tells the market’s story from humble beginnings to a world-renowned cultural and culinary cornucopia,” said Dr Begakis.

“It appeals to a wide market, both young and old, and gives people a piece of the market to take home and enjoy with friends and family.”

Authored by Katie Spain and Fiona Roberts, the book takes an in-depth look at the market’s history.

The multicultural array of recipes also features dishes from South Australian celebrity chefs and market champions Maggie Beer, Adam Liaw and Simon Bryant.

Adelaide Central Market Stories, People & Recipes, is available to pre-orderfor AU$79.95. It is due for release in December.
