Winners of the 2020 World Rum Awards were announced on 12th April, with Rockhampton’s Saleyards Distillery taking the win for their popular Capricorn Spiced Rum.

Following two rounds of tastings, the local dark and hearty spirit was recognised as the best amongst judges of the global awards that annually showcase the very best in all internationally recognised styles of rum.

Turning to technology for final decisions due to COVID-19, the judges conducted their final tastings at their homes while professional rum herder, Peter Holland chaired the occasion via the internet.

Head distiller, Warren Brewer was extremely excited to hear news of the internationally recognised award.

“It’s great validation of all the hard work the team here has put into producing a distinctive spiced rum and this acknowledgement shows its real quality,” said Warren.

“Some of the other category winners are really well-known and respected rum distilleries with hundreds of years of production and knowledge under their belts. For a new regional distillery such as Saleyards to match them is an incredible testimony of our product and we are very proud.”

Described as ‘candied fruits on palate with a nice balance of spice, vibrancy and surprise’, the judges were full of praise for the complexity and quality of Capricorn Spiced Rum.

Capricorn Enterprise CEO, Mary Carroll is absolutely thrilled for Warren and the team at Saleyards Distillery and couldn’t be prouder of them for taking out this prestigious award.

“Culinary delights (as a visitor drawcard) is one of our destination’s ‘hero experiences’,” said Mary.

“Visitors seek out local tastes when visiting new places and we are spoilt in this region to have access to such quality produce – from our local seafood, to Australia’s Beef Capital and not forgetting the agricultural food bowl of the Central Highlands.”

“Yes, we are in very challenging times at the moment, however a significant award like this reconfirms that the products and the produce in our local area really are first class and makes us even more excited about rolling out the ‘welcome’ mat when the time is right.”

Located in an historic Queensland Hotel, Saleyards Distillery was founded in 2016 by a group of young distillers, including Warren and his wife Catie, who commenced working on their superb spiced rum, which was distilled with Central Queensland molasses.

While visitor tours are temporarily unavailable due to the current crisis, Capricorn Spiced Rum along with a suite of liqueurs, gins and vodkas (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are available for purchase from the distillery and online – https://saleyardsdistillery.com/shop/.
