Shelter Brewing’s latest limited release beer, the Campfire Stout, will hit bars and bottle shops from Monday 28 June, 2021. Shelter describes the beers as their “ode to the bush telly” and is inspired by the countless cold nights spent around a roaring campfire at holiday spots across Western Australia’s South West.

Head Brewer Jason Credaro said a few things went into forming his tribute to the campfire.

“It’s a classic beer that throws back to a simpler time,” he said.

Camping is the simplest form of holiday, one that a lot of us remember doing on road trips to various parts of the South West.

“You drink instant coffee for brekky, go for a walk and swim during the day, eat snags for dinner, and at the end of it all, sit around a campfire, drink a few beers and tell a few stories.

“We didn’t go too exotic on the ingredients, but what we did is go big with the more traditional stout ingredients – huge malt bill, a ton of oats – resulting in a silky smooth, roasty brew that will warm your soul and you don’t have to think too hard about.”

The other aspect involved enlisting the help of a local pit master.

“We wanted to give the beer a faint, smoky backdrop to really transport the drinker to a camp chair around the fire,” Credaro said.

“To do that we got Chris Richards from Smokin’ Bull BBQ to smoke the malts. They catered our staff party and absolutely nailed the food, so I thought they could have a crack at barley!

“They got it right for sure, the smoked malts provide the perfect hint of smoky flavour without overpowering the beer.”

The Campfire Stout will be available at Shelter from Friday 25 June, and at local bars and bottle shops from Monday 28 June.
