Located to the west of the island of Majorca, the region of Calvià has 30 top-level sports facilities, which makes it a forerunner in Europe for athletes or sports enthusiasts to train and compete. Showcasing Calvià’s sporting reputation, the village of Peguera hosts an annual end-of-season middle-distance triathlon for European athletes, called Challenge Peguera Majorca on 16 October 2021. Just 20 minutes away from Palma, Peguera boasts a course surrounded by golden beaches and scenic hills. With more than 300 days of sunshine and mild temperatures in autumn and winter, Calvià is the ideal destination for outdoor sports combining sea, nature, mountains, urban areas and traditional villages.

Participants can take in some of the most beautiful parts of the island whilst running, swimming and cycling around the course specially designed by the Challenge Majorca team, local athletes and the Spanish triathlon federation. To begin, athletes will swim one 1.9km lap around the turquoise waters of Torà beach, ending up at the first transition zone on the golden bay to prepare their bikes. Next, competitors will cycle two 45km laps along the coastline, past some of the island’s most popular beaches before racing through the famous Serra de la Tramuntana Mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cyclists’ speeds can reach up to 43mph in some stretches of the course with challenging uphill moments and exhilarating downhill sprints. Finally, the last leg of the triathlon sees runners pace themselves on a boardwalk which connects the popular beaches of Tora, Els Morts and La Romana. With their goal in sight, the race ends in the heart of Peguera in its crowded plaza and promenade, whilst the public cheer on.

After the race is finished, the journey does not have to end; athletes and their friends and family can relax by visiting any of the region’s 22 scenic beaches or 14 characterful villages to celebrate completing the track. A programme of activities has been designed alongside the event by the organisers with a pasta party and a junior race as part of the fun.

There is still time to sign up for the triathlon with registration available until 14 October, or just attend as a spectator.
