It appears to me that all a number of airlines, and sadly especially our two home grown ones, want to do is talk about doom and gloom, with now Qantas CEO Alan Joyce, having the gall to say he will help fly back stranded Australians, if the Federal Government subsidises the flights.

How “generous” of you Alan, but where has your national pride, empathy and generosity gone?

I suppose not a surprise because, as we all know, Qantas is no longer Australia’s national carrier, but a money-making machine, making massive profits over the last few years, but amazingly now crying poor and also announcing recently that there will be no commercial international flights until 2021.

On the other side of the coin, other airlines that fly into Australia, for example like Emirates, Etihad and Qatar, which Joyce accuses of being subsidised by their states, are already ready to operate to and from Australia and are already doing so to repatriate Australians, albeit so is Qantas, and when the green light to operate fully is given they will be no doubt will beat Qantas at its own game.

The funny thing about Joyce’s ongoing accusations about these carriers is that if Qantas had not been privatised, with massive funds milked out of it [as will happen to Virgin Australia now it is owned by Bain Capital] to pay dividends to shareholders and vastly inflated salaries to its executives, Qantas would have remained a “state owned carrier”, it would be subsidised no doubt by the Government, probably now would be doing very nicely thank you and would also have to repatriate Aussies FOC!

In the meantime, while I know that in March Alan Joyce announced he was giving up his salary for the rest of the financial year, I wonder if now the FY is over, if it has been reinstated? I reckon that with his total remuneration last year at A$23.8m ($24.8m) with a base salary of A$2.17m, he can afford to waive his salary for quite a while!
