The 10th edition of the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, will be celebrated with a series of live events in Bangkok, Hong Kong and Tokyo, with the potential of additional locations to be confirmed. The 2022 ranking of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants will be revealed during an on-screen awards ceremony on Tuesday, 29th March broadcast to a global audience via Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Facebook and the 50 Best Restaurants TV YouTube channel.
To mark the occasion, 50 Best aims to host events in key Asian cities, giving local gastronomic communities a chance to come together for culinary discussions and for the announcement of the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 list and special awards.
William Drew, Director of Content for Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, says: “Since its first edition in 2013, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants has brought together food communities from across the region to recognise Asia’s diverse dining scene and reward culinary innovation. In 2022, we are delighted to continue this tradition by hosting simultaneous events in Bangkok, Hong Kong and Tokyo, allowing local chefs, restaurateurs and media to celebrate shared achievements in person and collectively learn which restaurant will take the coveted No.1 spot on the list.”
Each event will include red-carpet arrivals and interviews, a drinks reception and a live local edition of the established thought-leadership forum #50BestTalks prior to the ceremony itself. Further details of individual events will be revealed closer to the awards ceremony. The staging of the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards events in different cities across the continent reflects the ongoing uncertainty around freedom of travel in and out of various countries.
Stefano Bolognese, Sanpellegrino International Business Unit Director, says: “For the tenth consecutive year, S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna are delighted to work together with the 50 Best organisation to recognise the richness of Asian gastronomic culture. This year’s event, hosted within different key cities, will be an even further celebration of the diverse local dining scene. Diversity is a value that we are committed to supporting – thanks to voices and ideas coming from different regions and traditions we can push innovation and evolution within the sector.”
In 2021, the annual Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list welcomed 11 new entries. The prestigious awards ceremony built to a crescendo when The Chairman was named The Best Restaurant in Asia, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, the first time a Hong Kong restaurant had topped the list.
Individual Awards and the 51-100 List
As part of the Asia’s 50 Best programme, a series of special awards will be announced prior to the official ceremony on 29th March. These include: Asia’s Best Female Chef Award, the Icon Award – Asia and the American Express One To Watch Award. Additional awards will be announced during the official ceremony, including the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award, the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award, the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award and Asia’s Best Pastry Chef Award, sponsored by Valrhona.
As part of its mission to promote emerging talent and recognise the region’s diverse cuisines, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants will once again announce the list of restaurants ranked from 51-100 on 22nd March, one week prior to the virtual awards ceremony. All in-person events remain subject to confirmation based on local Covid-related guidelines.
The Voting Process
The annual list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants is created from the votes of the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential group of over 300 leaders made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and regional culinary experts, with a 50/50 gender balance.
Prior to 2021, each Academy member voted for 10 restaurants, with at least four of these from outside their home country/SAR. Since the global pandemic has restricted international travel, the voting rules have been revised to reflect this change. This year voters could nominate a total of eight restaurants, including up to six from their home country, but with no obligation to vote for restaurants outside of their home country/SAR.
50 Best works with professional services consultancy Deloitte as its official independent adjudication partner to help protect the integrity and authenticity of the voting process and the resulting list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.
