BEIA - logoAotearoa’s business events landscape is poised for a monumental shift as the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) prepares to open its doors in February 2026. This long-awaited development signals not only the completion of Auckland’s largest convention centre but also the dawn of a new era for New Zealand’s position on the global stage.

A Milestone for Aotearoa’s Event Industry

Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) Chief Executive Lisa Hopkins expressed the industry’s collective excitement over the confirmed opening date. “After years of anticipation, it is thrilling to have a definitive timeline. The journey has been challenging, marked by hurdles that have tested the resilience of both the NZICC team and the wider business events sector,” Hopkins stated.

Originally envisioned as a beacon for international business gatherings, the NZICC’s path to completion has been anything but smooth. However, Hopkins emphasized that the focus is now firmly on the future. “Instead of looking behind us, we can, with certainty, look forward. This time next year, we will be ushering in a new era for Tāmaki Makaurau and New Zealand on the international stage.”

A Game-Changer in Business Infrastructure

Strategically located in the heart of Auckland, NZICC will stand as Aotearoa’s largest convention centre, complementing Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre and Tākina Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wellington. These facilities represent New Zealand’s commitment to creating world-class infrastructure tailored for business events.

“The global business events industry is valued at NZD2.8 trillion, and New Zealand is now positioned to capture a significant share of that market,” Hopkins noted. “The potential for this sector to drive growth, generate jobs, foster knowledge exchange, and strengthen business connections—not to mention its positive impact on tourism and hospitality—is immense.”

Looking Ahead to MEETINGS 2026

The NZICC’s opening aligns perfectly with the 30th anniversary of MEETINGS, BEIA’s flagship event, set for June 2026. This milestone event will be the first significant gathering hosted at the new convention centre, highlighting its state-of-the-art facilities and cementing Auckland’s reputation as a premier business events destination.

“Although it has taken longer than anticipated, the results will undoubtedly be worth the wait,” Hopkins remarked. “With world-class infrastructure, enhanced international connectivity, and diverse regional offerings, New Zealand’s appeal as an aspirational destination for conferences, corporate meetings, tradeshows, and incentive travel has never looked brighter.”

Securing New Zealand’s Future as a Global Business Hub

The NZICC’s launch is more than just an infrastructure milestone—it represents a strategic move to solidify New Zealand’s role in international business events. Large-scale conferences often book venues four to six years in advance, and the certainty surrounding NZICC’s opening is expected to extend the pipeline of business opportunities for the country significantly.

“Business events are a long-term game,” Hopkins explained. “Now, with this certainty, the long pipeline of business for New Zealand’s flagship new facility is going to get longer. That signals great news not just for the sector, but for the country as a whole.”

The NZICC’s opening is set to invigorate New Zealand’s economy, foster international collaborations, and showcase Aotearoa’s unique cultural and natural offerings to a global audience. As the countdown to February 2026 begins, New Zealand stands ready to embrace its future as a worldwide leader in business events.
